When did trading coaches start? I honestly never heard of this practice until Doc Rivers got traded. I really never thought they could be traded like players.

Not basketball, but the first time I can remember it happening was Tampa Bay trading for Gruden and then kicking the everliving shite out of Oakland in the Super Bowl.

Raiders got two 1sts and two 2nds for him.

I think Jason Kidd ruined the market... raising expectations of what you could get for a coach that someone else coveted.

I realize Thibs is respected and several teams would take him. What I don't get is how Chicago holds "all" the cards like everyone is saying. Don't they owe this guy $9 MILL over two years? (a guy they don't want as their coach).

I suppose ideally someone (Orlando maybe) would trade for him so that they get him instead of another team (Nola maybe).

So you are trading to get him instead of letting him go elsewhere.

I sorta like the idea from the bulls.

Chicago doesn't hold much, no one thinks that Thibs will be the coach next season. Also, he obviously won't be traded to a team that he doesn't want to coach.

If Orlando isn't Thibs choice, he won't go there.

There's a difference between trading a player and trading a coach.

Well all the talking heads think they do. They're talking about 1st rd picks etc for him. Is a coach with remaining contract like a player (as far as trades)? Meaning if a team trades for Thibs they would have to give Chi equivalent of $9 MILL in compensation (picks, cash, draft picks, etc)?

No, coaching salaries are different.

Also, a player and a coach cannot be involved in the same trade. Thibs can basically say, "I'm not going to another team, I'm the coach of the Bulls until you tell me that I'm not", which is basically what he's already said.

So if another teams wants to hire him for the same 9 mill or more, what needs to take place?

The Bulls need to fire him (they would owe him the 2 years 9 mil) or buy him out for a lower agreed upon value. If they were to trade him, he'd have to agree to the trade and they could only receive money and/or picks for him.

Does the money and value of picks have to equal the $9 mill?

Yep. That's the reason the Garnett to LAC trade was blocked by the league. Even though they were trying to treat it as a separate trade, it was clearly part of the deal.

No, you can trade a bag of chips for him, if they'll accept it.
