The answer is an 8 team playoff set up this way

8 teams:
- The power 5 conference Champs
- The highest ranked non power 5 team
- 2 at larges (wild cards)
This playoff would protect the integrity of the regular season and make the conference championship games relevant. Through the power of the two wildcards, it would make sure that SEC or Big Ten could get a second or perhaps third team when warranted. And it would give us a Cinderella in the playoff. Western Michigan this year, Houston, Boise in years past. It would make the smaller schools relevant again as well. The committee could seed the eight teams as they see fit, and be responsible for choosing the two at larges

Not a bad idea but scrap the CFP committee.

As much as I used to fight it(I've been a proponent of 6 teams with byes for top 2 for 10 years now), I think I'm finally coming around. Some games won't mean as much, but more games will mean something. However, that 1st round HAS to be played at the higher seeds' home field. There has to be an incentive to finish 12-0 or 11-1.

This is your answer to a non-existent problem.
Posted on 12/5/16 at 11:15 am to Allthatfades
the answer is no playoffs.

No thanks, I prefer 2 teams in the postseason with a shot at the title, that works for me.
Also, you think this will stop the #3 at large team and #2 non power 5 team from screaming and making their case?
This changes nothing IMO.

Treat it like the NCAA Basketball tournament if we are going to make it a true "playoff". I still like 12. It makes the regular season valid, as you still have to win a conference. You also still need the arbitrary SOS advance for the At-Large. I know tOSU fans and some SEC fans hate it, but it is an idea.
Winner of 10 FBS Conferences (Conference chooses how the winner is determined)
Top Indy
At-Large, who can not be seeded higher than 5
Seed it and play it, no rematches in first Round.

because for some reason OP wants to reward G5 teams who get to schedule cupcakes the entire season; it makes absolutely zero sense.
but yes, just have 3 at large teams qualify, and the G5 schools can potentially get in that way.

Maybe the P5 should go on the road to play these games?
Miami did it. Why can't others do it?

8 teams:
Power 5 conference champs
6 wild cards
3 wild card winners join the Power 5 champs and boom. 8 team playoff.

The committee would almost assuredly make the highest ranked power 5 team one of the legacy schools.
I would expand the playoff to 6, make it a rule that the 5 conference champions (as long as they have 2 losses or less) have an auto bid, and then take an 11-1 team that has a good resume (if they somehow didn't make their conference title game or win their conference).
Boom. Debate over.

Ummm, I don't think that's 8 teams.

There are, what, 66 P5 teams? Assuming there are no conferences, how would you do it? I've been meaning to ask you.
ETA: I mean, how would schedules work and what would the playoff format look like.

i personally like 6 as well, but just take the top 6 teams, regardless of conference.

8 team playoff. Power 5 champs are 5 out of 8. 6 wild cards play and the 3 winners join the Power 5 champs to make the 8 team playoff. Let the committee select the 6 wild cards.

The best part of the current playoff is that "power 5" conference winners don't necessarily make it.
