The fine people over at FiveThirtyEight have come up with a way to examine just how clutch a player can be in the playoffs, when the clutch is really present. How did they do it? Essentially, they took each of the nominal starters since the NFL really became the NFL in 1970, then measured the QB’s performance against a replacement level signal caller’s expected performance. “Replacement level,” in this case, essentially meaning an average NFL quarterback for that particular season. The results are a mixture of the expected and the totally befuddling, but we’ll get to that momentarily.

5. John Elway
4. Joe Flacco
3. Kurt Warner
2. Joe Montana

1. Eli Manning

“[Manning’s] New York Giants have often been underdogs in the postseason and projected to a record of 4-7 or perhaps 5-6 in his 11 games. Instead, Eli Manning’s teams have gone 8-3.”

What is so hilarious? Flacco has won two thirds of his playoff games and sports a pretty ridiculous 8-5 record in road playoff games (Brady is 5-4 in comparison). So Flacco is regularly winning as an underdog which is clutch.

The fact he is overpaid and kind of sucks during the regular season has no bearing on his playoff performance.

Bradshaw not smart enough. He couldn't spell cat if you spotted him the "C" and the "T".

I totally agree with 1. I've been amazed at how Eli can have mediocre seasons, then play like the GOAT when the season is on the line.

I will pick Montana. Manning had two miracle catches, or he is 0-2 and Brady is on this list.

Brady is 22-9 in the playoffs, with 4 super bowls if were going off records in championships he would top this list.

Kurt Warner, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rodgers are top 5 in career playoff passer rating with Super Bowls and an offense dependent on them. I would probably call them the most clutch.

Aren't those 8 wins the most all time? Or pretty close to it?

I think Elway holds the records for the most interceptions in the Super Bowl.
