Texas Rangers, Arlington to announce new stadium plans

1. This one will have a retractable roof.
2. I'm glad the team will stay in Arlington. Arlington has supported the Rangers since 1972 and deserved the first chance to make this happen.

Glad to see the Arlington rangers are joining the 21st century.

Why do they want a new stadium? I thought the Ballpark at Arlington was supposed to be one of the most unique in the bigs.

Good idea to have a retractable roof for how brutally hot summers are there. I always thought rangers fans loved their stadium though?

Time flies. They've been at the ballpark about the same length as the old Arlington stadium, believe it or not.
There is more in play here. Rangers undoubtedly went to Dallas recently and said "uptown would be even cooler if..."
Or even more stinging... Frisco.

So I guess the shelf life on pro sports stadiums is like 20 years now. I'm excited to see what Houstons new stadium looks like in 5 years

Globe Life is a vast improvement over the old Arlington Stadium. But at the time, retractable roof technology was brand new (and Toronto wouldn't have done it if MapleGov hadn't put in millions).
We don't love it that much to miss it for something that's not an oven in summer.

The lease on Globe Life isn't up until 2023, and it opened in 1994. That would be 30 years if they don't move before then.

Bittersweet
The ballpark is very nice and a great place to watch a game, however it needs a roof
This is a good thing. Where will it be?

I guess a roof couldn't be added onto current stadium? It is a nice park.

It's ridiculous that stadiums are obsolete in such a short amount of time.
Sure, some old stadiums weren't used for as long, but they were built with tax dollars exclusively for one team. Wasn't Arlington Stadium originally a minor league park, and they added on? So the investment wasn't as big as it is with the current stadium.
I give Atlanta a slight pass because it was used for the Olympics, but Atlanta has its own issues, as the Georgiadome is a fine facility. It's the era of screwing taxpayers, but why? Are we so pampered as a society that we need shopping malls, massive big screens, and gourmet food to enjoy a game?

I saw where they said it would be almost 500 million to renovate and add a roof

Kind of a waste of a perfectly good stadium. The Rangers Ameriquest Ballpark Field GlobeLife Park in Arlington has aged well and doesn't appear dated compared to other newer parks.
But if you've ever been to a day game there in the summer time and baked in the sun, a roof makes a frickton of sense.

As long as Arlington keeps its priorities straight. I mean they've kept DART out so the hookers can't lea... er, I mean the Dallas riff raff can't move in.

And sometimes, like in the case of St Louis, the bond isn't even paid off yet. Incredibly shitty on the Rams/NFL's part to not chip in to pay Ed Jones Dome off before leaving
Posted on 5/19/16 at 10:37 pm to Quidam65
What? I hope that's not tax money paying for it. The Ballpark at Arlington should last 50+ years.

I'll never forget going to a night game there in the middle of the summer and sweating my arse off at like 9pm. It was miserable.

Hell, I'm not a Rangers fan and I like it. Good sightlines, good vendor access, good layout, and REALLY good parking situation.
I love watching games there. You can park reasonably close for cheap, go buy tickets wherever for pretty cheap, and food/drink/beer are reasonable. You don't get the "downtown" vibe and you won't find much to do within walking distance but overall it isn't a bad stadium at all.

It's a fantastic stadium! This is unreal to me...what A total waste of taxpayer money. That park is easily one o f the beat I've been to and I've been to all the famous NE stadiums. It even looks great on tv. If they want a retractable roof, just figure out a way to put a canopy or something a la Seattle Mariners stadium for 1/3 the cost of a new stadium. This one really pisses me off.

Well this stadium is next on my list. Looks like I have about 7 years to make it happen
