A buddy of mine tried to tell me that SJ is a top 20 running back of all time. Like a true friend, I've been making fun of him ever since.

Does he actually have an argument or am I correct on thinking he is crazy?

FWIW, he's the type that can never lose an argument so I'm not sure how much that is playing into it

On the all-time list...he's wedged between Marion Butts and Barry Word.

top 20 is a pretty big stretch, but it's not "full retard" or anything like that

Top 50 maybe. He's had 7 consecutive years of over 1,000 yards rushing which is impressive in this day and age. But if he continues his pace he probably will be a fringe top 20-30 back. Unless he just completely goes off his last few years, but I doubt it.

I can agree with that. You have no idea what arguing with this guy is like though so it has turned into me acting like it's the dumbest thing anyone has ever said

He's going to be top 20 in yardage after this year, maybe early next year.

He's 28. Let's say he puts up 3 more seasons.

1,200
900
500

Those may be generous, but 2,600 more rushing yards would put him 16th all time, right behind Fred Taylor.

If you look at total yards from scrimmage, he could end up top 20 there too.

NOt entirely unreasonable statement.

It isn't that crazy. He isn't a top 20 back but with 2 more full seasons he could easily be in the top 20 in all time yardage (not that it would make a top 20 back) Because he's always been on horrible teams I have a feeling he will end up being pretty underrated by most people, your friend not included.

He's only been in the top 5 in rushing in the league twice in his career, one time being 5th. I agree that he's definitely one of the more underrated backs, but top 20 is a stretch to me. Top 30 and then we're talkin.

Just in the last 10 years i would put

Ladainian Tomlinson
Chris Johnson
Preist Holmes
Ricky Williams
Jamal Lewis
Adrian Peterson
Brian Westbrook
Arian Foster
Ray Rice
Maurice Drew
Edgerrin James
Corey Dillion
Tiki Barber
Shaun Alexander
Clinton Portis

all ahead of Jackson

I would have liked to have seen him in his prime on a good team though. He should have gotten the hell out of St Louis

These 2 are stretches. Brian Westbrook was an average RB and Holmes was too inconsistent.

S-Jax is right there with some of those other backs though, like Dillon, Williams, James, and Barber.

The guys who try that get called greedy, ungrateful, spolied athletes who should fulfil their contracts, shut up, and play.

Ranks:
31 on career rushing attempts (2138)
32 on career rushing yards (9093)
58 on career touchdowns (52)
121 on career YPC (4.3)
19th on career rushing yard per game (79.1)
48th career yards from scrimmage (12096)
77th career all purpose yards (12175)
137th on career rushing/receiving touchdowns (60)

I think he ends up top 20 on many of the rushing stats playing on a poor Rams team for much of his career. He has had a pretty remarkable career playing in shadows on flashier players.

I would love to see the qualifiers on that number.

I might be a bit out of line on totally laughing at Foster and Johnson, but lets be honest here, Johnson/Foster are both dumb as dirt and very early in their NFL careers.

Top 20-30 would be a reasonable place for him once he retires. S-Jax will be remembered as a remarkably consistent RB once he retires, but that's about it. Nothing special or outstanding, just consistent.

I woud only put LT, Adrian Peterson, and Chris Johnson above Steven. The rest he is above or equal to. If you put Steven Jackson on a good team he's considered an all time great IMO.

You're crazy Brian Westbrook was the most explosive player in the NFL at one point. Preist Holmes was a 3x first team all pro. Jackson couldn't sniff the jockstraps of Barber Dillon Williams and James.

The only one you could argue Jackson is close to is Shaun Alexander. Alexander had the luxery of running behind one of the greatest OL/FB ever yet only produced like it one year.
