I must say I am extremely surprised.

I am not surprised that Curry won; I have no problem with best guy on the best team winning an award like this. I also think Curry is a top 5 overall player and is the main cog in that team. I am honestly shocked it was not much much closer than this. Whether you like Harden or not, he carried his team to 55 wins without Howard for half the games, without T. Jones for a large stretch, and without Beverly/D-Mo at the end of the year.

If you had told me Curry got 75 of the total 130 votes with Harden getting 50 I'd understand more. Harden getting 25 seems way too low
People like Curry's game and don't like Harden's game. It's as simple as that.

Curry's style is more pretty to watch. When he's on, he's bombing away from 3 and can't miss. He's making the scoop shot lay-ups, breaking ankles, etc. It's fun to watch. People like that.

When Harden's on his game, he's hitting 3's, making some step-back jumpers, and getting to the rim and making lay-up after lay-up or getting fouled and shooting free throws and occasionally breaking ankles. It's just not as aesthetically pleasing even though it's just as if not more effective.

So if the numbers were close, they were going to vote for Curry because they like him and his game better. That's really what it came down to.

i know you dont watch anyone but the rockets, but the warriors never once went to a scrub lineup in that series

Pels tied or won 8 out of the 16 total quarters. Chance to win

Why do you think Curry ran away with it then? I figured it would be close

I think it had way more to do with winning 67 games.

when you're up 25 the foot is gonna come off the gas more times than not. Guess Pels almost making game 1 a close game is something Pels can carry with themselves to next season.

What's funny about that. It's the truth. People like watching Curry play more than Harden. He's more fun to watch.

So if him and Harden are neck and neck, people would rather vote for Curry.

Harden would really have had to be the clear MVP to win.

Best player in the league on the best team in the league. It's pretty simple.

Well yeah. It's goes hand in hand with having the best player in the league.

People like Boom were saying all year Davis couldnt have a claim to the MVP on a team that isnt in the playoffs (ended up in the playoffs anyway). Now he wants to act like records dont matter

Warriors were 11 games better than Houston
Rockets were 11 games better than the Pels

Arguments can be made for the top 4 or 5 MVP candidates. You start looking at records, and people would lose their shite if AD and his team's -11 games got more votes than Harden and his team who was +11 games. Use same scenario with Curry vs Harden

1. I don't like PER when trying to compare players at the top. PER in my opinion should be used as a general guideline to judge if a player is good or not. Meaning, if you have a PER of 25-30, that means you are a really good player. For example, the difference between a PER of 28.3 and 27.4 is meaningless. It doesn't mean one is better than the other.
That's fine, but if you are going to scrutinize the precision of a statistic counter to your argument, then you should do the same for the statistics supporting your argument.

2. Many of those advanced stats have a lot to do with the team the player plays on. I take them with a grain of salt.
Well the 2 plus/minus statistics tease out the impact of the team and/or player variables. Both support Curry. It would be dishonest to take that with a grain of salt.

quote:

3. Put Klay Thompson next to Harden instead of Patrick Beverley and see how much better his numbers look. Or put a comparable SG to Beverley next to Curry and see how his numbers look
Well that's just speculation. You are willing dismiss empirical data against your argument, but are ok with some unprovable speculation to support your argument?

hmmm, as I am a well known Rocket and Rockettard hater....I am a little torn with the MVP vote results. The MVP race was much closer than the ending vote results. Seems as if Steph being the media darling outweighed Harden's MVP like stats.

Should be a great conference finals regardless, if Houston gets there that is.

what's funny about that? IMO Paul got shafted more than anyone, and Westbrook finished much too high.

Here's how it should be IMO

Curry
Harden
Paul
James
Davis
Westbrook

LeBron is always going to get votes as the best player in the league even if he doesn't have the best season. It is just how some people perceive the award.

Completely agree that Paul got shafted in the voting. He carried that team when Blake was out.

Watching the Pels games against the Warriors compared to against the Rockets, there's no doubt in my mind Curry is the MVP. It goes beyond stats. On the ball they're about even, harden might even be slightly better with his ability to draw fouls. But off the ball...my god. Curry has a gravitational pull the size of fricking Jupiter. He bends the defense so out of shape trying not to give him open looks, it's a big reason guys like Klay and Draymond have been so good. For the most part, whenever Curry wasn't on the floor the Pels were the better team. Replace Curry with say, Jeff Teague, and the Pels have a legit chance to win that series.

And frick, even if you do guard him it barely matters. He went 5-5 on contested threes in game 4. And then there's the psychological impact of those inevitable two minute stretches every game where he hits 3 three's in four possessions and all of the sudden your double digit lead is down to 1 or your 4 point deficit is now 14 points. It's back breaking

Whether Curry deserved it or not is not my issue with the MVP. I think we should change it to the MPP (Most Popular Player) award. Congrats to Curry, but it was a popularity contest that won it, and Golden State being a media darling compared to Houston.
