DALLAS (SMU) - Veteran coach and innovator of the "Air Raid" offense Hal Mumme has joined SMU as an Assistant Coach/Passing Game Coordinator, Head Coach June Jones announced today.

In January of 2013, Brent Schrotenboer of USA TODAY wrote, "In the first 100-plus years of NCAA football, only 10 players passed for 10,000 yards and 100 touchdowns in their careers. In the past 15 years, 49 have done it. Hal Mumme is one of the reasons why."

Numerous college head coaches are part of Mumme's coaching tree - either direct descendants or second-generation offshoots: Mike Leach, Dana Holgorsen, Sonny Dykes, Art Briles, Kliff Kingbury, David Dean, Greg McMackin, Ruffin McNeill, Will Muschamp and Chris Hatcher.

He was at SLU and then left to one of the New Mexico schools then he got cancer. Guess he is cancer free now.

It is incredible to see his coaching tree...coordinators that learned under him have become successful as head coaches.

Interesting considering Run & Shoot is very different than the Air Raid

SMU will light it up next year with June Jones and Hal Mumme running things together. Mumme and Leach invented the Air Raid at the NAIA level and have been successful everywhere since

Mumme went 11-38 in 4 seasons at New Mexico State.

He followed that up by going 28–16 at McMurry.

His defense at Kentucky was awful. If not for Couch he wouldn't have won a game.
