Shooting free throws underhand is superior; However almost no one does it

Despite being proven to be the most effective way to consistently score from the free throw line, most players won't employ the underhand shot for fear of being labeled a 'sissy.'

Maybe he was just good at it that way...that's no guarantee anyone else will be good at it.

The only time Wilt Chamberlin was good at shooting free throws was when he was using the underhand technique.

so one player was able to successfully shoot that way and that makes it superior? steph curry shoots over 90% from the line by shooting overhanded, i guess that makes it even better than this. you actually think players would be afraid of shooting that way if it actually was a superior way to shoot free throws?

Elena Delle-Donne is a 6 foot 5 woman who shoots 93.6% in actual games. Yet guys in the NBA can't make 50%? I don't get it.

They've done studies on it. (I forget where)
Underhand does allow you to be off and still make it. It's a forgiving shot.
Normal shot results in on or brick.
There is something about the rotations and soft nature of the underhand...
You will always have a higher % because it is more forgiving to being off the mark.
That said, you'd have to really practice it to find that sweet spot that is foreign to most players.

can someone explain to me how that matters. how can we pull an equation like that when we know shite about how effective people usually are when they shoot underhanded free throws? how can we look at the average free throw rate of people shooting overhanded and then put it into an equation of how successful people would be underhanded if we dont have any way to put their success rates into context?
what about shooting free throws underhanded allows them to use that equation and find that number?

Maybe if you've done it your whole life. Players have the muscle memory of shooting it conventionally. The secret to great free throw shooting is going through the same exact routine every time you shoot. Mine was 3 dribbles and a spin. That and lots and lots of practice.

Mahmoud Abdul Rauf was about to break Barry's season FT % record. All he had to do was hit one more FT. It was the last game of the season. Barry was in attendance sitting courtside. Right before Rauf shot that final FT Barry started screaming to try and distract Rauf. It worked as Rauf missed the FT. Barry was kicked out and banned from the arena for future games.

There's a theory about hand size not allowing some to be great FT shooter. As the ball stays in contact longer with fingers.

What about underhanded free throws makes this hard to believe?
What about the obvious greater amount of backspin and more forgiving trajectory isn't obvious.

I thought it was widely accepted that underhand free throws were better for most people. Especially with those guys with huge hands.
