This also filters into a sub issue. Kids nowadays only playing one sport is pretty stupid imho.

I don't think the entire argument is stupid. It's just that black youth isn't playing baseball as much as they used to and you've seen a upswing in white youth playing the game/travel leagues and such.
The basis of the argument of it being "too white" insinuates that the MLB doesn't want any minorities which is totally untrue due to all the huge presence of Hispanic players.

I think the "too white" comment is targeted at Black & Hispanic American youth not playing the game. Hispanics outside of the US is a different topic.

Russillo bringing up why is it ok to say baseball is too white

thats not usually what is said

usually what is said is that inner city youth aren't playing as much baseball as they used to, and as a result you're seeing fewer African Americans in the majors than you used to. Then what you see is a retired black baseball player working to get baseball equipment and fields for inner cities in his local community.

I fail to see what the problem with any of that is

This isn't the MLB's fault though. No one is keeping them from playing. Lorenzo Cain was a track star and he made the choice to play and look how that turned out. It's a problem of exposure. Large cities don't have room for expanses of grass for a field. Ciites are full of concrete though which is easy to place a basketball court.

I think it has more to do with how expensive the sport has gotten with travel ball leagues and such. I don't think anyone ever said that "it's the mlbs fault".

Similar to NASCAR investing money in trying to get more minorities into racing. Both leagues are trying new experiments to see what happens

I actually think Russilos greater point is people want to "fix" the lack of black Americans in baseball even though the percentage of players is only about 3-5% under the percentage of black people in America, all the while white Americans in the NBA is about 50% less than the percentage of white people in America

Is the same thing not happening with basketball and AAU?

I don't think you can really compare the cost of Travel league baseball & AAU leagues.

Fair enough, but I think one of the causes I'm hinting at is younger kids committing to one sport year round than in the past.

Black Americans tend to play basketball and football first and run track 3rd before even considering baseball. That is not the MLB's fault just like it isn't the NBA's fault that more white kids play soccer and baseball.

Baseball can also be a pretty expensive sport over a period of time.

Not as expensive as hockey, but baseball shite is not cheap.

But, these days, used gear is in play, where as when i was in HS, there wasn't used gear, it was paying for new rawlings glove, spikes, etc.

Back then it cost you close to 2K to gear up for hockey(not goalie, much more), and that was before you paid to join, and everyone paid for ice time. Hockey was for the upper middle, not middle class.

But today, you can get new gear, used and suited for 300-400. And you aren't paying for ice time.

Baseball the same, you can find newer, used gloves, etc. for cheap.

Both are still expensive, but now much more kids can play.

The U.S. Census Bureau defines Hispanic/Latino as referring to “a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race.”

In fact, Hispanics can be white, black, Asian, or multiracial. That’s because the term “Hispanic,” like “Latino,” refers to an ethnicity, not a race. And a majority of Hispanics actually self-identify as white. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, 53 percent of Hispanics chose “white “ as their race, while 36 percent chose “some other race.”

That's why now when you feel out any government form asking for your race, passport or DMV whatever...

It will say - what ethnicity are you?

1) White/Non-Hispanic
2) Hispanic

Do black players really choose basketball?basketbal is more accessible to them. How many inner city schools have quality baseball programs or the funding needed to support one ?

Right, because everything must begin with the understanding/acceptance that white people are evil and any shortcomings among persons of color must be attributed to institutional racism.

You do realize that not every black lives in the inner city, right?
