Remember when OKC was going to be the next dominant NBA franchise?

it was around 2011 when they had made their run to the WCF led by a 23 year old durant, a 23 year old westbrook, an emerging 22 year old harden, and an emerging 22 year old ibaka that people started to wonder if this would be the team of the 2010s and once they made the NBA finals the next year, it seemed pretty likely that it would happen. now after injuries and trades, it seems like we could be getting close to seeing their ability to be an unquestioned top tier team come to a close depending on what happens with durant after only one trip to the finals

i get that GS already has a title, but does anyone think 5 years from now we will look back on GS and go, for whatever reason, "they did not win as much as we all thought"

OKC's predicted dominance was largely based on potential that never materialized. Golden State's is based on established dominance.

I'll say they win at least two of the next five titles, probably more. The only thing that might change this is if Durant and Lebron team up.

I mean, losing Russ for the 2012 playoffs and KD for almost all of last year probably had something to do with that.

That 2012 Thunder team is the one that kills me. 1st seed in West, were more efficient with K-Mart off the bench than the Finals team from the year before. fricking sucks.

If the salary cap hike came at the same time as the OKC reign began, the whole situation would be a lot different. Harden would have been kept and they would have likely won a few championships.

The reason why GS is winning and will continue to win is two reasons. Their core is young and healthy and their core is cheap looking at future years where the cap continues to go up.

Curry: 12mil -> locked through '16-'17
Bogut: 11mil -> locked through '16-'17
AI: 11mil -> locked through '16-'17
Thompson: 16.6, 17.8, 19.0 -> locked through '18-'19
Green: 15.3, 16.4, 17.5, 18.5 -> locked through '19-'20
Barnes: Free agency after this year IIRC
Current salary is ~70mil, ~89 in 2016, ~108 in 2017,

Two of the core 3 will be underpaid vastly when Curry gets his contract in the 100mil salary cap era. Then you have to add players who will want to take less to win, players who will re-sign and fit this system (bogut, AI, speights, etc)

You're looking at least 2 more years of this type of play. They're going to dominate for a while.

The atrocious Harden trade didn't help.

The 2012 season had that "changing of the guard" feel to it, seeming to herald OKC as the new West overlords. SA was supposed to decline. GSW wasn't on anyone's radar.

Crazy how quickly and unexpectedly the sports landscape can shift.

Uh.. Difference is OKC was going to be the next dominant team because they had potential and made 3 conference finals in 4 years, GS is the next dominant team because they took the NBA by storm last season, won the NBA Championship and have been obliterating teams this season with the possibility of breaking the record for the most wins a season. GS isn't going to be the next dominant team - they already are.

Clay Bennett has forever cursed that franchise.

The further along the Harden trade goes, the worse it looks. It was terrible at the time, but right now it looks like one of the worst 5 trades in NBA history.

People forget how awful Harden was in the 2012 Finals. He disappeared shooting under 40%

He also carried them in the West finals.

They lost Russ in the playoffs one year. Then Ibaka the next right before the WCF and basically spotted SA two games. Then Durant last year. Injuries have really fricked them over.

They fricked up when they let harden go. No question about it.

I think a lack of a scheme/identity has hurt the thunder as much as anything.

Brooks rolled the ball out....

Mark Jackson rolled the ball out and Steve Kerr replaced and instilled a system that moves the ball.

OKC is moving the ball better than ever and if they stay healthy, then they are a contender.

I am certain that the combined usage rating for KD/Russ is higher this year than in any prior year and one thing is for sure. Both of their numbers are the equivalent of one guy carrying a team by himself. Like I said earlier. Injuries. The last time they lost a series with Russ/KD/Serge healthy was the finals vs the Heat.

I don't think its crazy talk to say that OKC has a decent shot at upsetting GS

I'm very curious what they do at the deadline
