Reasons to HATE a player...

Some of y'all have horrible ones.
If a player is overpaid, hate the GM.
If he plays too much, hate the coach (or the owner for forcing the coach to play the overpaid player).
If a player works hard and stays out of trouble, I refuse to hate him. This applies to college and pro.
Jeremy Lin is an example for me. The guy works hard and wants to be better. Yes, the Rockets got him to sell tickets and jerseys. But that's not HIS fault. I know people who HATE him as a person because of the way he plays or because he plays.

Sports fandom is inherently irrational and emotional. There is no invalid reason to like or hate player. Do what you want. Just remember, you do not know them. You know their PR face.

Good reason.
Also, having horrible body language and representing your university horribly off the field is a good reason. These are the qualities of a former LSU player I can think of.

when most people say they hate a player, they really are just a hater.... meaning they wish they were that person

Most people hate a player because of the media. I hate hearing about certain players all the time! It never ends and as a result I hate the person. Not their fault. Just the way it is.

Hate is harsh, but I do dislike some players/athletes.
Lance Armstrong tops the list. Not for what he did, for the defiance.

Good point, Lester. I guess good play can cancel out the hate for me.

I haven't seen anyone claim to hate Jeremy Lin.
I've seen frustration with the media over coverage on him, but not hatred.

so true. But the Rae Carruth story always pissed me off. I don't hate any player really but that was despicable.
