Golden State is better this year mainly because of their own upgrade in coaching and line up shuffling.
Atlanta, Horford in particualr, is healthy after two seasons of pectoral tears.
Here's some quotes from the Lowe article I linked a few pages back...
and what's better is that the Hawks say the rust isn't even completely off yet..
With the East being weaker, Atlanta has a better chance than Golden State to make the finals, although if I'm the Hawks, I don't want Chicago in the second round AT ALL.

Here's some quotes from the Lowe article I linked a few pages back...
quote:
When he’s healthy, Horford is a legitimate NBA superstar — a chameleon who is good at everything, great at some things, and always flying beneath the radar. He doesn’t pile up insane numbers, hog the ball, or appear in national TV commercials. He is concerned only with winning, even if the path there involves sacrificing shots to focus on passing, setting good picks, and battling 7-footers under the basket
quote:
“He is our cornerstone,” says Kyle Korver.
quote:
“He kept me in check,” Noah says. “Al is a winner. The only reason he’s underappreciated is that he plays in Atlanta. Everyone in basketball circles knows he’s a top player.”
quote:
. Horford is a great one. In his best seasons, Horford has hit 50-plus percent of his long 2-point jumpers — Nowitzkian territory.
and what's better is that the Hawks say the rust isn't even completely off yet..
quote:
The early signs are good, and if Horford keeps progressing, Atlanta has a real chance to make the Finals.
“He hasn’t peaked yet,” Atkinson says. “I don’t know when that will be. But if it’s toward the end of the year, that would be perfect.”
With the East being weaker, Atlanta has a better chance than Golden State to make the finals, although if I'm the Hawks, I don't want Chicago in the second round AT ALL.

If you don't have the cavs on your list then your list is invalid
Best player in the world plus Kyrie Irving plus kevin love.
Just starting to find their stride

They've been in the playoffs the past 2 years with a lot of young players.
47 wins to 51 wins, and they are on pace for over 60 wins this season. It's called an upward trend. They are ready to take the next step.
Do you even read the shite you type? How is this any different than the Hawks??

The Celtics added 2 hall of fame players (at the tail end of their primes) that season, is that what Atlanta did this off season? That was obviously an outlier, that occurred because of the huge increase in talent, something that did not occur in Atlanta.

Well the Hawks got back Horford for this season, which is a pretty significant piece.

Luckily young players happen to get better with time. Instead of bringing in aging talent, we drafted talent with huge upside and brought in role players with that same MO.

I'll take the Cavs against any team in the NBA in a best of 7 series...ANY of them. And vice versa, nobody wants to play the Cavs in the playoffs...NOBODY!

In the east I agree. Whoever comes out the west tho will win the title

Spurs and Cavs are really interesting. See how they play the rest of the season, because no matter what they will still be a force in the playoff.

I hope so. I could see the West champ playing something like 3 7 game series, which would be brutal.

He's very good. He isn't close to as good as Garnett and Allen in 08.

They got that much better in one off season?

the Hawks havent been out of the 1st round in 4 years. And the team that got out of the first round looked nothing like this team today.
this team today was 38-44 last year. Yea Horford was down, but i keep hearing about this "great" team. Winning 38 games in the East? C'mon.
As for GSW, their best players have gotten better year by year. They've added some nice vets. That's why no one is shocked that they are where they are. Doing that in the West in an accomplishment.
Being a middling playoff contender in the east for 3 years is not.

I'm confused by the Hawks. They started the season 8-7 and looked like the Hawks of last year.
Then they go on a 28-1 tear.
What changed?

Yeah. But I think the East winner will likely sweep the first round. Basically makes the real playoffs two weeks shorter for them.

It's gotta be something with coaching. Players don't just get that much better over night.

Agreed that they are a completely different team now.

New coach, completely new system, lose your best player... with that said, the team was trending in the right direction at the end of the year and took the #1 seed to 7 games. Add Horford to that group and another year of learning the system and here we are.
