As best I recall, four Kentucky starters fouled out by early overtime, with maybe one Duke starter at most fouling out.

I thought the officiating was very bad for that important a game, resulting in Laettner making that shot with four Wildcat backups in the game.

Does anyone else recall this--surely some Wildcat fans from those days might remember it?

Im an LSU graduate, my ole man a UK(his entire famlily from Lexington). While living in the state I was taught to cheer for Uk but appreciate LSU. I can remember Dale and Rick coaching their asses off. I cried when Duke beat UK. I grew up on the state of Kentucky basketball and the history of LSU and I love both. It really tears my heart when it comes to LSU v UK. Even though a LSU graduate I cheer for the team that it means the most too.

Thanks for the input.

Of course, I am for LSU first, having lived in LA many years ago. And Duke is the college basketball team I dislike the most.

I do recall that Laettner did something and could have been tossed out. It is sad the only memory most have from that game is that last second shot in OT by Laettner.

I contend that if the officiating had been up to par for a regional final, Kentucky would have won in regulation play and no overtime would have been necessary.

Here is the box score LINK

Mashburn fouled out towards the end of OT. Kentucky had one other player foul out. Duke had Brian Davis foul out, I believe in OT.

Box score

UK had 28 fouls to Duke's 23, with Brian Davis (a Duke starter) fouling out and a couple other Duke guys in foul trouble. besides Mashburn, UK had another guy who fouled out, Gimel Martinez. I don't blame you for thinking that 4 of their guys went out, they all (besides Mash) seemed to look like this with the cool staches.

You could say officiating is bad in every game anymore.

Yes, UK had a couple of starters foul out.

However, the outcome wasn't the officials fault. UK's strategy of trying to defend on the defensive side of the course was their demise. Pitino has said many times since he should have had a tall player on the inbounds so the throw had to be arched higher, allowing players to move into position to deflect.
You rarely see coaches now leave the inbounds throw unguarded.

I still wonder if Pelphry has nightmares about that last play. He just seemed to be frozen.

He does, I see interviews with him from time to time, and he still brings up that one play as something he still struggles with to this day.

Not sure it would have mattered, but had someone gotten a hand in his face, it could have altered the shot a bit, or at least obstructed his view to the basket before he let it go.

He never talked about it up here. I think it was a thing they said it would have been an interview ender.

Mashburn fouled out with 2 minutes left in ot. Only major one that fouled out. Only 2.

The refs actually let them play, and with that it turned out to be the classic game that it was... BUT Leattner should have been ejected for him stepping on tat dudes chest.

Off topic, but that reminds me a lot of NC State beating Phi Slama Jama in '83. I grew up in Houston and was 13 years old and that was a real crusher.

Sad? That was awesome. That mofo didn't miss a shot or FT that whole fricking game. That was one of the all time performances in tourney history capped off by "the Shot"

I always thought Kentucky had major foul problems with the refs during that game because Pitino seemed overly concerned with fouling...(translation...defending even moderately at the end.)

But that really wasn't the case...Pitino just blew it. He said they were so worried about fouling but he coaches his team to treat Laettner as if he had Ebola.

He let his players down IMO, because he instructed them to play like soft clueless muppets in the final seconds.
