Q: Most over-rated NFL coach of all time? A: Ditka

I don't get the Ditka veneration. Yes, he was the head coach of a Super Bowl winner, BUT....
--The '85 Bears' calling card was an epic defense, and Ditka gets basically no credit for the Bears' greatness on that side of the ball. Ownership forced him to accept Buddy Ryan as Defensive Coordinator as condition for getting the head job, and apparently Ditka wasn't even allowed in Defense meetings.
--In spite of a loaded defense and an offense that included one of the greatest RBs ever in Walter Payton, the team never even made it back to a second SB, in part because of Ditka's abject mismanagement of the QB position. Jim McMahon was a guy who took physical risks in his style of play, and Ditka had squadoosh backing him up. His big move in the QB department? Signing Doug Flutie. Please.
--Finally, there's Ditka's embarassing 3-year tenure in New Orleans, during which the Saints went 15-33 and Ditka traded an entire draft for a pothead running back, then thought this magazine cover was a good idea:
What a maroon.

frick that guy for what he did to the Saints. For the longest time, it made me angry to see him on television running his mouth about football. He's a grumpy old man who doesn't know dick about dick.

I mean, what sort of moron looks at that Saints roster and thinks "Hmmm. They're just one running back away!"? Jesus Christ, my 77 year old mother has more sense about football.

Drew Henson and Johnathon Bender

I nominate Bill Parcells, in 8 seasons without the GOAT running his defense, 10 games below .500. Zero playoffs wins.

Why in the hell would Rickey Williams put on a wedding dress and have his picture placed on the front cover of a sports magazine. Why would anybody do this?

Ditka should've won more Super Bowls with that Bears squad in the 80s. 1986 was inexcusable, that was one of the all-time greatest defenses and absolutely no dropoff post-Buddy but McMahon got hurt and they had to start a litany of QBs which undermined that dynamic that engendered the great success. 1986 Bears was the best scoring defense ever pre-2000 Ravens. That Ditka squad hosted 3 home playoff games post-1985 and lost the penultimate games, they were more talented than those Redskins teams in 86 and 87 what a joke. Yeah, Kuharich gave Ditka WAAAY too much roster power relative to that 1999 Draft and that backfired bigly on us until it was rectified with the Brees signing and Bush/Colston draft.

No one thinks Ditka was a good coach

Dick Vermeil, very short shelf-life and massive burnout, so lucky Martz was the OC to construct that legendarily prolific offense AND that Warner wasn't a bum at the QB position

Hard to argue with you.
Ditka is also a miserable person.

How can he be overrated? He is generally regarded as a idiot. He is the worst coach to ever win a super bowl

Don McCaferty may want to speak to you as well as Brian Billick

McCarthy has had almost a decade of Aaron Rodgers in his prime and has one ring. He was one and done in a 15-1 season. And the NFCCG loss in Seattle was the biggest choke in playoff history this side of the Falcons and Oilers.
An thisbis borderline sacrelige, but Don Shula was 20 years of meh after the Sea of Hands, even with Dan Marino. And he lost a slam dunk win in SBIII.
And Don Coryell never reaching the Super Bowl with Dan Fouts deserves consideration.

I will give you

Don Shula
Completely changed his style to fit his players not the players fit him. Not his fault The Killer B's could not tackle. He is the coach with most wins in the NFL. Tells you how good of a coach he was really.

Don Coryell
Along with Van Brocklyn are the 2 most important coaches to passing game.

Dick Vermeil,
UCLA:
At UCLA Bruins, Vermeil compiled a 15–5–3 record in two seasons including a 9–2–1 record in 1975 when he led the Bruins to their first conference championship in 10 years, and a win in the Rose Bowl over an undefeated and number 1 ranked Ohio State team.
Eagles:
Vermeil began his NFL head coaching career in 1976 with the Philadelphia Eagles. Due to past trades by the Eagles, Vermeil's teams did not have a 1st round draft pick until 1979.
By 1978, the Eagles made the playoffs for the first time in 18 seasons.
Vermeil led the Eagles into Super Bowl XV after defeating the Dallas Cowboys for the NFC championship.
The Eagles did not have a winning season in the 10 years prior to Vermeil's arrival.
Rams:
Super Bowl champs

Kinda hard to argue Shula's overrated when he averaged 10 wins PER YEAR for 33 YEARS as HC. Belichick's the only coach who can even dream of approaching such longevity in excellence. Yeah Coryell's one of the most influential coaches ever(Sid Gilman disciple) but was incompetent relative to the defense which definitely cost that Chargers team a couple of Super Bowls. That 1979 Charger team losing to the Oilers in the playoffs when THEY WERE 22 POINT FAVORITES was the most outrageous, egregious thing especially considering both Pastorini and Campbell were inactive that game. People talk about the 1981 Chargers as some legendary team but they were 10-6 with a putrid defense and got destroyed by the Bengals TWICE that year(48-17 in regular season at San Diego). Of course they're still expressing excuses for the title game loss and blaming the weather, all that bullshiit sour grape losers do.
