you're in the business of entertainment, and you're thriving as a business, it means you're succeeding at entertaining.
Not really. It means you're succeeding at MONETIZING entertainment, which is different than actually being entertaining. Pro sports leagues have gotten increasingly corporate and bland, which is great for making tons of money, but kind of drag for actually being fun. A lot of things are wildly entertaining, but not good at generating revenue. Those are two different things.
Or are you going to seriously argue that Two and Half Men is the nation's most entertaining show because it gets the best ratings?

I'm at a loss but I'm also finding less reasons to keep up with Pro sports any longer.
Been like that for a long time...
$$$$$$ - once the players got guaranteed paid more than a million...even average suck players...MLB and NBA became unwatchable b/c you could see players not even trying or giving a flip.
NFL - still works to some degree because no contract is guaranteed for the long term.
NBA union ruined the sport - frick them and Kobe.

The NBA has had the problem it has always had: a virtually meaningless regular season. Not only do they have a long, boring season
I use to buy this, but not anymore.
The seperation in the western conference over the past several years has been 1-5 games at the end of an 82 game season. The difference between the 6 seed and 9 seed was 3 games last year. Home court for the 4/5 series was determined on a tie breaker. GS, MEM, DAL, & PHX were in a dogfight the final 3 weeks of the season to see who would get in.
At least in the West, regular season games can have serious consequences by seasons end. And many of them are played with alot of intensity.
The east in an abomination. I won't argue for it.

Great point, IMO!

No super stars like Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson to really spice things up?

More people like it, but the diehards feel the game is different or cheapened somehow. The truth is more people than ever before watch the product, which is the goal in these league's quest to make more money. And the diehards? They still yearn for clothes lines in the lane and free throw contests of the 80s as well as 3 yards and a cloud of dust, but most begrudgingly stick around despite their nostalgia of yesteryear.

Horrible recent Superbowls?
Outside of this past one they've been great for a while, along with some classic playoff games. (NO @ SF) (BAL @ DEN) (KC @ IND) (SF @ SEA) to name some.
I'm not as interested with NFL this year because the Saints have been an absolutel disappointment. If they wouldn't be awful right now I'd have way more interest. With the NBA I'm more into it than ever.
For College football, overall the product isn't as good. Every now and then you get a classic like Alabama vs Auburn, but overall it's plenty of blowouts and shitty matchups. I'll watch every LSU and ULL game, but the product on the field isn't as consistently good as NFL.

I guess I'm just not following. Yes they're monetizing entertainment, and consumers (fans, networks, etc.) are paying more for it than ever before. Businesses in the entertainment industry don't make more money my being less appealing to the masses, that just doesn't make sense. As I said, I realize many people are turned off by it, but clearly many people aren't and continue to watch, hence the record revenues, ratings, ticket sales, merchandise purchased, etc.

I'm kind I with you. Unless it's the Saints, LSU or the Super Bowl, I'm probably not watching it. I used to watch CFB from 9 am til midnight on Saturdays. Now I'd rather go to a movie or cut the grass. Watching sports just isn't on my to do list anymore.

same here. My interest level gets lower and lower every year.

college sports are all about who can recruit the best and which colleges are the most popular with the media. its not till you get to the NFL that you can actually tell if an organization knows what theyre doing, or if they're just good at talking to high schoolers. the whole "eye test" determing who gets ranked where in college football is a load of crap. no one gets into the super bowl on popularity.

I think college football is more entertaining than the NFL. But I think college basketball is nearly unwatchable and the NBA is way more entertaining

Rule changing?
This is the biggest thing for me with the NFL. The more rules they've added to improve player safety, the less I find non-Saints games interesting. It feels like pass defense is basically illegal, and the refs decide whether or not a team is allowed to play pass defense or not. The rules are applied very unevenly at different times of the year (pass interference and defensive holding basically cease to exist in January). It's nuts.

I may not have a state or city connection to a pro team but I used to be an avid MLB and NBA watcher when I was a teen. Now I can't be bothered to really watch it much besides the playoffs occasionally.
NFL still draws my interest because I love the game of football but there's a lot of factors for me thats making it less fun.
This being one of them. I hardly see any fire or passion out there anymore. Just a cold product that wants your money.
This. They've crippled the defensive side of the ball. Its horrible.
