I had just bragged on Adrian Petersen the day before that game saying he didn't fumble in key situations. I've hated him ever since.

Here's an unpopular but true statement -- there's absolutely no such thing as a "classy" sports franchise. It's a meaningless, dumb narrative that narrow-minded sports fans buy into. Sports franchises are businesses whose sole intent is to win and make money by any means possible. It's like saying Bank of America, Merrill Lynch or Hewlett-Packard is classy.

Ben Roethlisberger raped two girls and the "classy" Rooney family didn't bat an eye in keeping him on the Steelers.

Penn State was a "classy" program and fan base.

Very unpopular opinion, especially these days.

I never understand how this comment can be made. Take Elgin Baylor for example. Do you just assume he would be the exact same player he was in the 60's-70's? You do not have a clue how good he could be if he had the chance to play basketball year round as high school kids do now. He goes to college and gets world class training and nutrition, then continues that in the pros.
Baylor was a 6'5" guard that averaged 27 ppg in the 60's and he would do it in this era as well. So would Russell, Jerry West, Oscar Robertson etc

I think people look at this wrong for a different reason. The problem isn't that Baylor wouldn't survive with his 60s nutrition/coaching in the modern era, nor would receiving modern amenities necessarily help him.

The reason is that back then when an athletic unicorn showed up, there were maybe a few others maybe. Now, the level of play is higher across the board.
I think it compares favorably to women's basketball today, where there isn't enough talent to go around (think UCONN).

So I think the old guy's may have made it, but they aren't putting up those absurd stat lines. And since match ups/styles matter, some would completely disappear.

Too much offense is just as boring as not enough offense.

A game is only interesting when both offense and defense are on equal footing and both can get the better of the other given the right players and scheme.

Too many sports have rigged their rule books to favor offense because that's what the casual fan likes and it makes the sport worse overall.

The notion that high pitch counts = more injuries in the majors has never made sense to me. If this was true, then relievers would never have arm injuries.

John Wooden's run is amazing, but it was just as much a product of superior talent, a down period for the traditional powers, and booster Sam Gilbert as it was about great coaching.

Basketball is awful to watch.

If you actually look at the "Value" in MVP, Buster Posey should win the award most years.

The targeting rule in football is bad for the sport.

I think any overall award in a team sport is dumb (especially in football). Only position awards should be given out.

No. Saying that a higher pitch count increases the risk of injury is not the same thing as saying that a high pitch count is the only cause of injury.

The NFL is everything that is wrong with American professional sports. Over-hyped and over-commercialized; I find it incredibly cheesy and difficult to watch. Greedy owners and organizations don't help.

All American professional sports leagues should be forced to use promotion/relegation systems like English soccer. Our professional sports leagues are ridiculously anti-competitive, and the laws protecting the leagues/teams should be changed.

I appreciate baseball and try to enjoy it, but the MLB season is too damn long and each game clocks in at 3-4 hours. This makes the individual games seem utterly meaningless to me. What is the damn point of having so many regular season games? The NBA and NHL could shorten their regular seasons a bit as well.

Salary caps are anti-competitive and ridiculous. Players should be able to earn what they are worth. I'm ok with minimum salaries for the sake of some parity and player protection - but salary caps effectively allow greedy owners to hold on to more share than they are entitled/underpay most players.

I hate the way drafts works. The worst teams should not be rewarded with the top picks. Nothing else in life functions that way. I'd just assume have a free agency without the draft. Players and teams should be able to mutually agree on contracts without a draft. Strict roster limitations should prevent big teams from gobbling up too many players.

Travel baseball is fun. Most parents that we have meet are not trying to live out some childhood fantasy, most just like to watch their kids.

Muhammad Ali is the most overrated fighter ever. He was a weak puncher and many of his fights were rigged. He also lost too many big fights to be considered the GOAT.

The NBA is rigged. The officials can decided who wins each game and they often do. Allowing one team to play rough on defense with no fouls called and then calling touch fouls on the other side of the court.

Ichiro Suzuki is the most underrated player in Major League history.

ESPN should stay out of politics and stick to sports.

American Soccer is still uninteresting to me. At best they are our countries fourth best athletes. When we play other countries it is like watching our JV team play their senior varisty team.

I'll agree with most of that. I hate drafts. The player should at least have some say about which team he plays for. Pro/Rel in all sports would be great.

Agreed.

I'm not a baseball hater, though it has fallen deeply out of favor with me over the last two decades, but the season is unbelievably long. Whenever you have 100+ games in a team sport, it immediately devalues the import of your day-to-day product. The NBA could stand to lose a few empty calories games as well.

It'll never happen, but the MLB regular season should start in May and end in August. Having a regular season from April to October is absurd.

The guys on the Deadspin podcast had a pretty good idea about this a few weeks ago. They proposed a sort of auction-based bidding process to replace professional sports drafts, sort of like what you see in fantasy drafts.

I've never quite understood why leagues and teams mandate where players must start their professional careers. It's ironic that players can freely choose where they play their college ball but they can't make any money during that time, and when they can finally make money by being a professional they can't choose where they play for the first few years of their career.
