Fastball to the helmet, which should knock enough sense into them not to do that fricking shite.

How do you prevent that though?
how about no swing slides unless going head first. Otherwise feet must be pointed towards the base

It was a clean slide, he was reaching for the base. That's a terrible angle by the way. I said it live and even the Pirates announcers agreed it was clean

Sure he did. While flipping his legs out to hit Kang.

If they disallow the hard slides, they should disallow infielders throwing sidearms/low on purpose to nail base runners who don't get out of the way.

I think they should do neither though.

You can argue against the rule, but there is nothing dirty about it. The Pirates even accept that it was a good, hard slide on a baseball play.

The whole point of that is to create dangerous contact in a minimal contact sport. Of course it's dirty, whether the rule allows it or not

Link?

“I really don’t think [Coughlan] went in there trying to hurt [Kang],” Walker said. “I kind of asked Chris when he came back ‘You didn’t go in high did you?’, and he said he didn’t feel like he went in high, so like I said, our goal is to get people off their feet in the middle so their throw is off line or not as strong.”

As for the play itself, he said he didn’t believe it was dirty but that it was one of those plays that will and should be reviewed.

Pirates take

I absolutely think there should be a rule banning take out slides like there is for blocking the plate. But until there is you can't call this play dirty. Hard and aggressive sure but not dirty.

And the 162 game argument made earlier is silly considering the nature of this specific game and series in relation to the post season. This isn't braves vs phillies were talking about where you're playing for the top draft pick.

Yeah, starting your slide 5 feet from the base and 3 feet to the right (towards Kang) is completely clean.

You fricking retard.

Kang would do the same thing if he were trying to break up a double play and his statement shows that.

It should be illegal. But since the dawn of baseball it hasn't been.

We aren't talking Holliday vs Scutaro type slide. These are t uncommon. It's horribly unfortunate that this one resulted in an injury.

I agree that that is generally an accepted slide, but it shouldn't be. Much like a lot of baseballs "unwritten" rules or retaliation rules, it's stupid and just cause that's the way it always has been, doesn't mean it makes sense.

Yea they need to change the rule. But as the rule is written its acceptable. If this causes that then at least some good came out of it. I tip my cap to Kang for staying in there and not eating the ball and jumping over coghlan. That's a ballys move. Hate it for him.

Absofrickinglutely. It's chickenshit that you can take a dude out like that. All to break up a doubleplay in a 162 game season.

Protect the players.

I kind of agree with you. Not unlike the way football protects the punters...when they're turning the double play they're "exposed" and can be injured easily. Doesn't mean that Coghlan did anything dirty or illegal (as evidenced by Kang's statement).

I just think it's bullshite that they protect catchers (who are wearing a decent amount of equipment) but allow baserunners to just frick middle infielders up.
