PHILADELPHIA -- He's batting .154 with 53 strikeouts and only 22 hits. He is coming off the worst calendar month in the modern history of his franchise. And now Ryan Howard is headed to the bench, until at least this weekend and possibly longer.

quote:

Howard, 36, is earning $25 million in the final season of a five-year, $125 million contract, not including a $10 million buyout on a $23 million option for 2017. He just finished going 7-for-69 (.101) in May, with 28 strikeouts and seven hits in 75 plate appearances.

ETA: I did not realize that Howard was 36 years old.

hey baseball teams wanna keep giving these guys contracts till theyre almost 40 then they can keep enjoying this kinda performance. The madness has to stop at some point but it wont as long as fans keep buying tickets. Albert Pujols has like 4-5 years left of awfulness on his deal out in cali

Yeah it's nuts. Pujols is signed until he's 42

Baseball has the greatest Union in all of sports and I don't see it getting better. There is always a stupid team willing to pay

Hell, look at what Jason Werth is making. He sucks and is getting over 20 million a year for at least two more years at 37

He's definitely on the All-"keep getting them checks" team

Jason Werth really gets overshadowed in the "worst contracts" conversation.

I just think guaranteed deals are BS. The Nfl lets you gut guys whenever. Im all for paying guys non guaranteed deals with front loaded money ala the NFL but its just ridiculous to have to keep paying for this trash performance.

The problem with the deals is, some goofball GM will offer it up. Some of these guys will never learn.

A feel like a lot of these big deals (Pujols, Howard, Sabathia, etc.) are signed with the clubs fully aware that the back end is going to be a rip off, but they are thinking that the front end will be worth it.

I can't imagine that the Angels really expect Pujols to be worth $25M when he's 40, 41, 42... but was he worth more than that when he was 32, 33, 34?

Probably not, in all reality, but that has to be what the GMs are thinking.

He got a late start in the majors because he was stuck behind Jim Thome in the pecking order for a while.

Everyone thought the phillies were dumb for giving him that contract, didn't even need hindsight for that one.

The Angels made an investment in Pujols that was not based solely on his performance on the field. They wanted Pujols as an ambassador to the Hispanic audience in Southern California. The Spanish language media revenues for that market were the justification for Pujols' contract.

Owners don't "have" to pay these contracts, they choose to.

Of course. And it's going to be the same for guys like Harper and Bryant when they hit free agency. Some guys are definitely worth more to a franchise than just their performance on the field.

I watched the game last night and was shocked he wasn't starting given Scherzer's league-best ability to give up homers (that's a story for another thread) and that that's the one thing Howard can still do.

He's really really terrible.
