The rule might as well say, "If the receiver catches the ball in the air, you have to let him go and then you can tackle him."

Got his knee taken out because defender doesn't want to get flagged for targeting.

Then that play happens and defender still gets flagged for targeting.
Defenders can't win and careers are being damaged regardless due to unintended consequences of a dumb rule

Honestly, what do you even do as a safety in that position? That play used to be lauded across the league. It's literally impossible to separate the ball from the receiver without laying a hard hit.
