Lol. Ok so you at
quote:

Still in his prime

Then you post
quote:

He's got 2 years tops at the highest level.

That makes sense.

Brady is only making $1 million cash in 2017 with a $14 mil cap hit. His contract is middle of the market at best, how much less do you think he will take?

Brady is not in his prime anymore dude. Not sure why you're arguing that.

So, according to you, Manning was in his prime in 2013 right?

Exactly Brady's still awesome, but his arm strength is pretty weak now. This isn't 07 Brady.

Dude, he's 39. He'll be 40 for the upcoming season. You honestly think this is his prime?

ETA: He's still a great QB, but he's absolutely past his prime.

Different circumstances but that was certainly one of his best years of football.

Brady has increased his QBR each of the last 4 years. When was he playing better? 2007? A player's prime can be more than one season.

A player's prime football ability is not the same as athletic prime.

ETA: Glad you brought up manning. Colts decided to go a different direction because they thought he was past his prime. Manning goes on to play 3 more years of prime football and eventually win a super bowl. But at least the colts had Andrew luck and a career threatening neck injury to base that decision on. Pats have none of that.

why would he have some great decline this year?

Father Time creeps up on people. BOOM.

Some DE is going to catch Brady and body slam him OOF! and his shoulder will never be the same. On that day, Jimmy G will trot out onto the field and the Patriots will be glad they still have Jimmy G. Jacoby Brisset will be backup in 2018.

It is my understanding that the super cap friendly component of the contract ends after the 2017 season. Hence, the upcoming decision and the purpose of this thread.

So if he gets injured? Then, well, yeah. But health being constant why would you expect Brady to take a significant enough step back this year to get rid of him? The dude just threw for 450 in the Superbowl last year.

I'm not saying Brady isn't on the decline, but this article is stupid. The author wants to have a hot take and get out in front of this so he can say he was right of it does happen, but he threw out about a million caviates so he wouldn't have to take the heat when in all likelihood he'll be wrong.

And even if Brady is on the decline, he's got one hell of a leash in New England. They're not pushing him out the door for a guy who, in all likelihood, is pretty easy to replace.

He won't because that would be stupid. Do you even Brock Osweiler, bro?

notice they're beginning to keep/clear cap space?

still have 19.9mil this year
31.6mil next year

they're going to have re-sign certain players and let some go next year of course (edelman, ninkovich, etc) -- but they can still tag him and fit a TON of players.

they don't have a problem until 2018.

If they're going to guarantee Jimmy G $22 million as a backup, that's pretty ballsy.

It's something like this.

It's not that a player's strength or quickness changes dramatically in one year. It's that that fraction of loss of quickness or agility in the NFL now means that the DE gets there instead of missing you. He sacks you more often now, you accumulate injuries, and that's how players get brought down. The small decrease in quickness or speed now puts them squarely within reach of those that are trying to stop him.

It's a game of milliseconds. If you're on the wrong side of that you get broken down.

if he's your future (and you are 100% sure of it) but your HOF-caliber QB can still lead you, what else would you do?

Drag it out for one more year, it doesn't hurt too much the way they play with cap space and draft/FA

It cripples the team with a non-productive $22 million for 2018 and hands all of the leverage to Jimmy. I might entertain it if we hadn't just seen Kirk Cousins take the Redskins to the woodshed trying this kind of foolishness.

This is all assuming that kicking the can down the road another year helps you out of the situation. What if Brady still wants to play (it would seem unlikely, but he's still playing now).

That's a huge if. Obviously the Patriots know a lot more than we do, but he's done nothing to prove to the general public that he's the future.
