Washington is the only winless BCS conference team and has become a national punchline. Coach Tyrone Willingham is about as fired as a coach can be while still coaching his team.

But I wonder where the Huskies would be if they started the season playing Eastern Washington -- a rivalry game, right! -- Nevada, SMU and Massachusetts.

Actually I don't wonder.

The Huskies would have started 4-0, just like the team that actually had that schedule, No. 8 Texas Tech.

Instead, the Huskies have played a schedule ranked as the nation's toughest by the Sagarin Ratings. Instead of I-AA foes, they played BYU and Oklahoma and have Notre Dame coming to town Saturday.

Scheduling matters.

yea but at one point they were 0-5 vs the mwc.

they're just down this year, and having the tough schedules only emphasized it

Pac10 is 1-5 against the MWC. Its not like they are getting slaughtered by highly ranked teams. I agree they probably schedule harder than the norm, but the important thing is they missed their opportunity to capitalize on games they should have against D1 opponents.

Texas Tech's schedule is ranked 103rd toughest in the nation by the Sagarin Ratings. That terrible slate distracts from No. 6 Oklahoma State, which has played a schedule ranked 87th in the nation.

I guarantee TT's schedule goes above 103 after playing Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, etc

All but 2 games were on the road. If the PAC-10 schduled like the rest of the conferences with 3 easy teams and 1 premeir ooc game, then we would have 8-10 bowl eligible teams and 6 "ranked" teams most years. Formula for subjecitve success.

Most teams probably consider UNLV an easy game

Washington lost to Oklahoma at home (understandable).
Washington lost to BYU at home.
Oregon lost to Boise St at home.
Arizona St lost to UGA at home.
Arizona St lost to UNLV at home.
UCLA lost to Fresno St at home.

4 PAC10 teams lost home games to mid-majors....unacceptable imo.

EDIT: I just threw out some OOC home losses by Pac10 team

It certainly was. There is no doubt that the PAC-10 is down this year. But many conferences would be lees than they are with the PAC-10's ooc.

Like I said if the PAC-10 scheduled like the Big-10, SEC, or Big-12, and USC kept it's strong ooc schedule, then year in and year out the PAC-10 would be in the conversation for being the top conference.

Check how many were road and home. The PAC-10 plays a greater percentage of road games than anyone. That is why computer models that do not take home and road games into account are worthless dogshit.

Maybe good teams should win away games? You can't just dismiss losses by saying they were away games.

Not dismissing losses at all. Just proving how subjective rankings are. If the PAC-10 played yearly schedules like other conferences, then we would have 5-6 teams ranked year in and year out.

I am in no way arguing that it is a down year for the PAC-10, just not as bad as it appears.

Picking an accurate means of measuring schedule strength is pretty dicey at best IMO...

but I surely agree when PAC 10 teams play nine conference games and only three out of conference games (that may include one bcs team and a good midmajor).. that makes for a stronger computer schedule than:

1) a big east school with five out of conference games to fill (typically with creampuffs) or
2) a texas tech or 08 lsu schedule

For at least the bad teams in a conference it is surely in their best interests to play more cupcakes in an effort to get bowl eligible and build some sort of confidence... then even if they are truly below average teams they (barring a unlv/asu result) are unlikely to be embarrassed out of conference by teams of at least average quality

For better teams in a conference the reason not to play four creampuffs out of conference is self interest for a different reason... you can screw yourself out of the bcs bowl game you are hoping to reach... something which actually recently happened to 2004 cal when they were edged out by 2004 texas for mostly schedule strength reasons

As for the pac in 2008 I think the wounds are self inflicted as much as anything really... they just should have won more games out of conference than they have... certainly if you play only crappy teams out of conference you run up a better record... but just as certainly they have shown themselves to be not as good as might be expected this year

Depends if you are using Elo-Chess or his preferred Predictor rankings. Still the ACC has yet to play a good amount of their ooc games, so things will change.

FWIW I think UW loses to Nevada without Locker
