1989 Houston vs. Southern Methodist University.

In their first season back playing college football after receiving the death penalty from the NCAA, the SMU Mustangs were completely out of their depth against future Heisman winner Andre Ware and the #16 Houston Cougars. Putting up numbers one would more likely see on Junior Varsity mode in NCAA Football, Houston defeated the hapless Mustangs by the lopsided score of 95-21.

Houston's 1,021 yards of total offense in this game continues to stand as an NCAA record.

Other schools were at least attempting to be discrete about it. SMU was not and after being put on probation continued to blatantly pay players. They had to set an example to settle the SWC down. It truly was the Wild West.

No they weren’t. SMU got put on probation because they started to beat the Longhorns and Aggies and they just couldn’t have that. Were the Aggies being ‘discrete’ buying the Trans A&M for Dickerson? They were all doing the same things.

This guy gets it.
I for one am not happy at all having any Texas schools, especially Texas joining the SEC. Just cancer .

The Colorado vs Mizzou 5th down game will never be equaled as the most egregiously officiated game in CFB….that 5th down call in Colorado’s favor eventually resulted in a national title…..undeservedly.

Not only did they get a 5th down but had time to spike it on 4th down after the clock was mysteriously stopped after a dive over the middle and Colorado had no timeouts left. The officials fricking stopped the clock on an inbounds play for 5-6 seconds and then restarted it as Colorado was prepared to spike.

The clock should've run out and the 5th down should've never happened.

And then there was a debate that Colorado didn't even get in on the 5th down that was signalled a late TD.

quote:

Another controversy overshadowed by the "5th down" was the fact that replays seemed to show Johnson had actually been stopped short of the goal line on his touchdown run

quote:

Colorado football coach Bill McCartney, a former Missouri Tigers player, did little to soothe the controversy. Asked whether he would consider forfeiting the game, McCartney declared that he had considered it but decided against it because "the field was lousy.

Well both teams played on that "lousy field".

And then there was the phantom clip call in the Orange Bowl in the final minute against the Rockets return for a TD to negate Notre Dame's win in the Orange Bowl and give Colorado a 10-9 victory and most dubious national title.

People bang on 1984 BYU but 1990 Colorado has to be the phoniest AP champ ever.

At least the Coaches Poll told them to shove it.

In 1940, No. 1 Cornell beat Ohio State 21–7, then No. 1 Cornell beat Columbia 27–0, then 6-0 Cornell lost to Dartmouth 0-3 by forfeit because they had won on a 5th down on the last play of the game.

quote:

The game was conceded by Cornell after films confirmed that errors by the game officials had allowed an unpermitted fifth down as the last play of the game.

This was 1940...and cameras and the NCAA couldn't rectify this shite in 1990?

Cornell had won 18 games in a row and was ranked #1. At least they had the honour to take the L.

Texas has already destroyed two conferences. Letting those figs in the SEC is a huge mistake.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

Same thing with Art Briles at Baylor.

The only possible consolation with Texas joining the SEC is that EVERYBODY will be beating them, so...
