I knew one dad IRL who did not want his son to play football at any level. But eventually agreed that it was the son's choice. And by the time he made it to LSU the dad was very proud.

David later played in the NFL with some degree of success.

There's probably dudes in the NFL that are glad he doesn't let his sasquatch wife play either.

SFP, if that's truly the only thing you have to say on the subject, then why are you even continuing to discuss this? Just to browbeat? I would have thought you would be able to appreciate the nuances of the human condition, but it seems to me you have no room for any sort of debate. Let me guess...libertarian?

He changed his position on gay marriage. Oh, the horror! Someone in a position of power changed their mind on something rather than stubbornly holding onto position that was negatively affecting people's lives. Also, his religion is none of anyone's business but his own. I meet people every day that pretend to be religious just because saying that your not can be fricking annoying dealing with the preachy.types

I don't want a sitting President to quit smoking. Last thing we need is one of them having a nicotine fit while making important decisions.

As far as not "letting" his son play football, maybe he can pull an Archie Manning and ask teams not to draft him.

Judging by obama's athletic ability he won't have to worry about playing any sports.

when it comes to smoking, there isn't really a debate. and this is coming from a former smoker

and any parent who continues to smoke has decided that they want to encourage their children to smoke by example. you cannot smoke and expect your children to not smoke. that's hypocrisy

any poor person who smokes and complains about their finances is the ultimate hypocrite

He changed his position on gay marriage.

a more accurate representation is that he lied about his position in 2008

Someone in a position of power changed their mind on something rather than stubbornly holding onto a position that was negatively affecting people's lives

he's a liar and i cannot stand that, especially in politicians. this isn't exclusive to Obama

he's doing it again in this instance

Did you ever read the viral article about the woman who complained about being poor and working crappy jobs? She got a book deal and everything.

Her justification about why she smoked was great.

Btw, turns out she is a graduate of Ann and Mitt Romney's high school and didn't attend the school on scholarship.

I'm not reading anything that indicates he thinks football is more dangerous or even equally dangerous as smoking. All he said was that at this point people who choose to smoke or play football know from the beginning that there are certain health risks involved with their decision. Not exactly an earth shattering statement. There's plenty to dislike about Obama but some of the posts in here are ridiculous.

I agree.

1. For those saying you wish he would just shut up, he was asked a question in an interview. It's not like he called a press conference at the White House to discuss this. This is the same deal as with the Duck Dynasty guy, he was simply answering the question asked.

2. I tend to agree with him on the fact that football players know the risk they take on when they decide to play the game, just like smokers know the risk they take when they decide to smoke. That said, I would still let my son play football. Obama's opinion (which honestly is reasonable) isn't going to kill the NFL. It's the lawsuits filed by player after player that will claim that the NFL ruined their lives because they were apparently unaware that football is a violent sport. These are the same losers that made and subsequently pissed away millons of dollars, and are looking for someway to rectify their miserable post-NFL lives.

Hell, they just dug up the KC Chiefs LB who killed his girlfriend and himself last year so the family's lawyers could have experts examine his brain in the family's wrongful death suit against the NFL and KC. This is going to be the new norm. Everytime some fricking psyco ex-player does something nuts to someone else, a lawsuit is going to follow against the league for causing him to do it. This is despite the fact that most NFL players have a "screw loose" well before they make it to the NFL, and more than just a few are POS human beings aside from the football aspect of their lives and would be even if they didn't play football

Agreed on all points, although I would be less likely to let my own son play football.

The whole football brain issue is blown way out of proportion, I mean there are risk in every profession. Are people dieing on the field every week because of it? The answer is no, is there a risk? Yes, but there is a huge reward for the risk. How many professions are more risky with less reward, you could name hundreds

It can't be both.

If he admitted it recently, and called out smoking this week, he called himself out.
