With their lease in Oakland ending at the end of the 2024 season, the Oakland Athletics will need a place to play before their Las Vegas stadium is (hopefully) ready in 2028. And it's entirely possible it could be in Oakland.

According to ESPN, the City of Oakland is set to offer the A's a lease extension to cover the time between the end of their current lease and the opening of their new stadium in Vegas, as well as any possible time overruns.

The document obtained by ESPN and KGO-TV in San Francisco reportedly reveals that the City of Oakland has dropped many of the demands in the original draft of the lease extension. Instead, the city is asking MLB to pick one of three options: facilitate the sale of the A's to a local ownership group; leave the A's colors and name in Oakland (meaning the team in Vegas would have a new name, mascot, and colors); or give Oakland a "one-year exclusive right to solicit ownership of a future expansion team."

Two items have reportedly remained on the offer. First, the lease term would be for five years with an opt-out after three. And the A's would be required to pay a $97 million extension fee, which is nonrefundable even of the team opts out after three years.

The figure of $97 million is symbolic.

That figure is also "nonnegotiable," according to Hanson.

The A's, who currently pay just $1.5 million in rent to the City of Oakland, have a much different figure in mind. According to ESPN, the A's offered a two-year contract to the city, with payments of $7 million and $10 million.

The team has been exploring different options to find a home at the end of their lease. They've reportedly been in talks with Sacramento, as well as Salt Lake City, Utah. However, the A's would have play in minor league stadiums in those cities. Staying in Oakland would allow the team to continue to play in a MLB caliber stadium while also not uprooting the entire organization for a temporary two-year stay in another city before moving to Vegas.

Interested in seeing what the team choses

I don’t get it
I thought the Vegas deal was done

Now Oakland wants to keep them?

Most of Vegas doesn’t want them either

Read the post dude. Lease extension on the stadium until they leave in 3-5 years, not trying to keep them.

Theyre offering them a deal they know the a's won't sign. Basically telling them to enjoy their minor league stadium the next 3 seasons.

The one thing I hope is keeping the As name and colors in Oakland, similar to when the Expos became the Nationals when moved to DC.

There's retired Expos #s up in Nationals Park.

The A's are about to be in their 4th city. The colors and team do not belong to Oakland, and the City of Oakland has done nothing to earn the history, colors, and Athletics name from the franchise.

give Oakland a "one-year exclusive right to solicit ownership of a future expansion team."

This will never happen with the current political, demographic, & criminal issues the city has & that won't ever be changing along with no shot at any taxpayer money going to build a new stadium.

The As used to have very good attendance when they were winning, but terrible ownership has not helped.

Plus they have been in Oakland since 68 which is longer than the Expos (now Nationals) Brewers, Padres, Royals, Rangers, Mariners, etc

Retired numbers are normal, look at the Braves with Spahn

Played for the Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta Braves.

And that is proof that the history follows the franchise, and doesn't stay in the city.

Aside from Jackie Robinson, are there any Brooklyn Dodgers or NY Giants retired #s for the Mets?

I agree with you about the fact it is the fourth city for the franchise, but I would also say that of those four cities the As are most identifiable with Oakland and the franchise has easily had its most success there.

Plus, I personally think that Las Vegas should rebrand to something specific toward the city. Aces would be the obvious choice if not of the conflict with the WNBA team. I’ve always thought that “Black Jacks” would be a cool name and offer some interesting marketing ideas.

The A's name, logo, colors,etc..should remain in Oakland.

I want LV with their own new name, colors, logo..and preferably new improved ownership rather than current A's hierarchy.

I'd prefer an expansion franchise and ownership group.
