Would be a perfect match. He made Stanford relevant. Stanford and Northwestern are the same kind of schools when it comes to academics and culture. Seems like it would be a good natural fit.

That job might be completely radio active in the short term

Anchored down by academics in a big boy conference, following a legend of the school who had a relatively good level of success so you can’t exactly have zero expectation, adding on top of the whole hazing thing that will likely lead to a mass exodus of the roster either way, and since they have 42 mil tied up in litigation with Fitz I doubt they are going to want to pay very much for a coach either

Normally this would be a total interim coach situation, but can’t really do that with this one so I think they’ll end up with a real young guy or a real old guy looking for one last run

They should go after Bob Stoops. He lives part-time in Chicago. He still enjoys coaching (XFL) with little pressure.

I would agree in most cases but Shaw is likely burned out and enjoys time away from major coaching. His last few years at Stanford were brutal but he did have some really good units

I think you’re vastly overestimating the appeal of what that job is today. The current roster has 100% freedom to transfer due to the coaching change. However gets hired needs to build fricking Northwestern from scratch. Not many top line coaches are signing up for that.

Good lord no… Shaw was handed a great situation and slowly made it terrible.

I don’t think people have a true appreciation for the absolute awful current state of the NW program… they’ve won 1 game in the last 22 months.

Shaw completely checked out and was just cashing checks for the past 3-4 years.

I think he's much more likely to end up the AD somewhere than coaching.

And no B1G championship. Makes you wonder why they originally just gave him a 2-week vacation. But he was a great player and those roots run deep.

I think Skip Holtz would be a great add here. He's going to run a clean program, he'll get guys to come play and compete. He is also a guy that can come in clean house, get the culture foundation laid, and then go out in a few years. His last name still carries some weight in that area of the country. Also has shown he can still do X's and O's with the work he has done in the USFL. He won't have you beating the top dogs in the B1G, but he'll have you at 6-6 or 7-5 playing in bowl games after a few season, and being in games against the big dogs in the conference.

Northwestern was just in the B1G Championship Game vs Ohio State in 2018 and 2020...So lets not act like its been 10-20 years or something. NW is a tough place to play at...just like Stanford.

Northwestern is going to struggle with the same thing that Stanford did.

Early signing, NIL, and the transfer portal have all set nerd schools back

early signing started in 2017. Standford won 9 games in 2018, then 4-8, 4-2, 3-9, and 3-9

with everything that just happened, good luck getting the academia at NW to play ball

he's won just 14 games over the last 4 years, and they are underdog in all 12 games this year. He checked out a few years back.

This is such lazy revisionist history IMO.

Yes, Harbaugh got the program turned around, had two Heisman runners-up, and one great season. Guess who was Harbaugh's OC that entire time?

Shaw as HC finished in the top 20 6 of his first 7 years on the job. He finished #3 in his 5th year. Shaw was a really good coach for most of his tenure.

He fizzled out at the end, but as has been pointed out, Stanford's decline coincided with the introduction of the early signing period, and then NIL.

Did they win the Big 10? No. There is a big arse difference between the B1G East and West. Northwestern 'can' compete in the B1G West if everything goes right, but a coach is NOT getting fired for not winning the B1G Championship as the poster suggested. Yeah, this isn't the late 70's to early 90's Northwestern, but it's still Northwestern.
