You maybe right but Toews was definitely worth it. Best two way player in the game

Yeah, that's what it costs to keep your superstar. I've got no problems with the Toews deal. but, painful as it was, I think the Hawks should've let Kane walk for that price.

It's tough. There's absolutely NO way I would sign Kane for that deal if I was another team. But if you're the Hawks, it's really bad PR to let a fan favorite like that go. Plus, the man is clutch in the playoffs. He's definitely not worth that, as I've said, but it's not a horrendous deal. Like the Orpik deal was...

Dubinsky re-signed with the CBJ this morning. Six years, $5.85 mill cap hit. A little more than I would have liked to pay, but I love Dubi and he's extremely important in the locker room.

If we're going to make the "only this team should make this deal" argument, you can make that argument with the Caps. I don't like the argument, but it's at least a logical take. Here it goes...

The biggest problem with the Caps has been a crappy defense. Last year, partly due to injuries, the Caps have been rotating AHL players as their third pair. The Caps hired Barry Trotz, and he's been given a pretty wide berth to build the team in his image. The window is now, Ovie and Backs ain't getting younger, and the Caps need to go all-in to win now.

So, if any team should overpay for D, it's the Caps. they had plenty of space and very few roster spots. And signing two way over market deals to blueliners doesn't put the Caps in cap jail due to the conservative management of the cap the past few seasons. And now a team weakness is now a team strength. The Caps drop their AHL guys back to the AHL and now have a blueline corps of Alzner, Carlson, Green, Orlov, Niskanen, and Orpik (with Erskine and Hillen as either injury replacements or, more likely, trade chits and cap casualties). The blueline went from the worst in the division to the best.

Orpik is a stay at home defensemen who ate the toughest minutes on the Penguins, plus he's a PK specialist, with the Caps lacked aside from Alzner. The Caps went from the wost D-corps to the best with two signings. Now, they are paying $5 million for a third pair D, but he's better than a minor leaguer. Or Erskine, who is an even shittier version of Orpik.

I don't entirely endorse that argument, but I see the logic. And I think for the money they spent, they could've signed Niskanen and Stralman instead. But Trotz wanted Orpik and if the cost of Trotz is Orpik... I can live with that. But I do think that a stay at home defensemen (and a greybeard -- people forget that the Caps are still one of the youngest teams in hockey) was more valuable to the Caps than to any other team, and can at least justify the overpay.

But why did it have to be Orpik? Ugh.

Subban (finally) signed. Eight years, $9 million average cap hit. I think it's a bit of an overpayment, but it's not horrible. Should be better in four-five years, too, with the cap probably going up.

With O'Reilly being signed last week and now Subban, the bigger RFA dominoes are starting to fall. Still a few prominent ones that need to be signed (Johansen, Niederreiter, Krug, Schultz...).

Will be an interesting few weeks. Still have Philly, Chicago, Tampa, and Boston that are over the cap.

I don't get the hype on Tampa this year as a playoff lock. They got worse in this offseason, and they weren't all that great last year. Really, the only playoff lock in the East is the Bruins, and they got a lot worse this offseason too. The Pens are close to a lock, but their defense is paper thin now (especially if Matta is out) and they are one Crosby injury away from being in deep doggy poo, and Crosby is not the most healthy of players.

Tampa is going to have to offload some of their talent as well. But, Stamkos has flow, so............

Looking at HF site though they do have a lot of good young prospects. Because you can totally ride a bunch of 19-24 year olds to the cup, I mean just look at Edmonton!

Yeah, Stamkos is an utter bad arse. But now that MSL is gone, who is their second best player? Maybe it's Palat, but he was a rookie last year. Their #2 guy in goals was Filppula, who was about the 10th best Red Wing.

Disagree they got worse. Added Stralman, Boyle and Morrow (not that those are great players, but they're all solid) and really only lost an aging Salo. Plus they have a healthy Stamkos after he missed more than half the season. They still have to make some moves to get under the cap, so that could change things, but I'd be very surprised if they missed.

The Metro is probably the craziest division in hockey. Really nothing would surprise me except the Pens missing the playoffs and the Hurricanes making it. Any of the other six teams making/missing the playoffs and the order of finish wouldn't shock me at all, including Pittsburgh not winning the division and Carolina getting up to fifth or sixth in the division.

I forgot they added Stralman. The other moves... meh. But Stralman is pretty damn good, and helps the blueline.

I'm with you on the Metro. Every team is about even, though I think everyone is overrating the Rangers based off of their playoff run. They got hot at the right time last year, but I don't see them as significantly better than the rest of the division. Flyers could be in trouble as they keep shedding payroll. Honestly, I really like the Jackets and Caps. I wouldn't be shocked if one of those teams didn't just make the playoffs, but won the division. Pens are still the front-runner, but they've got a lot of eggs in the Crosby basket, and he's never been the picture of health. They are such a top heavy roster.
