I knew he was going to turn into a good player if somebody could figure out what kind of role to put him into.

I was going to say Wes Chandler but I looked up his stats and he was actually pretty good for the Saints. I have no idea why they got rid of him.

Not drafted but went to training camp with Green Bay and was released.

Len Dawson.

I don't know if they were busts with their original teams, but Willie Davis and Larry Little were traded after their second seasons, then became big stars.

And would Brett Favre qualify? He was 0-4 passing in his olnly appearance with the Falcons.

Came here to post this.

There's a lot of examples of these - most of them have the common thread of a really messed up initial team, and they thrive when put in an environment that gives them a chance to succeed. Likewise the good orgs don't let their highly touted players bust to begin with.

Was going to put him at QB, but I figured somebody would bitch about Saints bias and argue that he wasn't a bust in San Diego.

He was a pro bowl QB in San Diego in 04' when the Pro Bowl was still worth a damn. I just don't think you can label him a bust in SD. He was not NO Drew, but a bust he was not.

Came here to post that. He went from a guy that would have never seen the field had other QB's had never been injured. He in all honestly should have never made it.

Possibly the best rags to riches story in football history.

Young was stuck with Buccaneers, but flourished with 49ers. Carter tanked with Eagles, but took off with Vikings.

Never thought Brees, Williams, Bush, or Plummer were ever busts. Brees was good for Chargers until injury. Williams was solid with Saints before they got tired of his act. Bush was a disappointment, but still decent. To me, a bust is a complete flop. Not someone who is a disappointing, but still serviceable player. I'd say Mandarich and Farve are some of the best examples so far.

People keep saying Favre so I can only imagine many here don't know what the word "bust" means.

Favre was drafted in the second round, spent one season in Atlanta where he didn't play because the coach didn't like him. He took four total snaps and was traded ten months after being drafted. He was then an almost immediate superstar in GB and went to his first pro bowl 20 months after being drafted.

Brett Favre was never by any possible definition a bust or a flop anywhere.

Some good examples for sure.

When I stated the thread I was envisioning players who were drafted in the top 15 area Of the 1st round. I think you lose the "bust" label when you 2nd round and later.

Tommy Maddox. First round pick in Denver, ended up out of football, took over in Pittsburgh for Kordell and made the playoffs. Lost the starting job when he got hurt in 2004 but served as a capable backup in 2005.

but his coach didn't like him in Atl because he was a shithead at the time and looked like he was never going to be dedicated enough to amount to anything

I think Favre said that in the bio he put out about 1995 but it has been 20 years since I read it. In fact, his story was enough of a redemption story to warrant a book when he was 25.

He didn't like him because he threw into coverage a lot and was being pressured by the owner and GM to play him. Partying and drinking never stopped many a great player from playing. Granville was being pressured to start him despite having an established starter who was playing well.
