Nebraska or Miami, which former CFB power has a shot at returning to greatness?

Both of these programs are a joke right now

There are other traditional powers but these are the ones who have had the most recent success at an elite level that are a complete dumpster fire right now

Logic says that Miami has a better shot because they have a very stout 2016 class (the Nebraska class is mediocre) but I'm not sure if a few of those guys don't de-commit based on the abysmal showing against Clemson in an empty stadium and no certainty about the coach of the future.

What say you?

Easier to recruit to Miami

But Nebraska has deeper pockets and much better facilities.

The emergence of TCU and Baylor as powers really hurt Nebraska's recruiting in Texas. These days I would take resources and fan support ahead of a recruiting base, but they have the wrong coach now. I'll give the Huskers a slight edge.

Miami. If the new coach is Mario Cristobal or the new coach steals Mario Cristobal away, you can kiss any south Florida recruit away. He will rope it off just like they did in the 80s

Nebraska has more advantages, but Miami has an easier path in their conference.

Give the edge to the Huskers because that school places more of a premium on athletics than Miami currently does.

I would say Miami. The could field an entire team with the best high school players from Miami only and compete for national championships.

I'd have to say Nebraska. While the recruiting is dim, they at least have a fanbase and an administration that actively cares about the football program. Unfortunately for our "corn-headed" friends, they can't seem to get out of there own way. But, certainly the passion and interest is very active in that state.

Miami has a President and university administration that wants nothing to do with football. Miami's fanbase is borderline imaginary. Texas High School football teams have better facilities than Miami and their football stadium is located a hour or so away. There most famous booster/donor is serving time...they are just an all-around mess. The best thing they've got going for them is being located in Miami-Dade County.

Exactly right, but didn't give an opinion RE: the OP.

I'd say Miami. With a good coach there the recruiting would be tons easier. The conference is easier. The facilities and fan support are obviously better but they have no inroads to Texas now that they don't play there much.

I suppose Nebraska could have an Iowa like season but I'm presupposing the OP's definition of greatness doesn't mean a fraudulently inflated record.

Miami. Recruiting. They just need someone to get in their and galvanize the right people and bring in the right recruits.

The ACC isn't a very deep conference.

Miami because of recruiting base alone.

However, Nebraska fans, donors, alumni and administration care way more, which does make a difference when it comes to anteing up for coaches and facilities.

Nebraska has better facilities, but are their pockets that deep? It's an okay school, but then again Miami has a rich but very apathetic alumni base.

eta: I'm going with Miami by default of being in south Florida. Golden sucked and still brought in fantastic athletes

Miami's fan base is dog shite. They're never coming back.

now that you mention it, I feel like Nebraska loses on a weekly basis in the most bizarre fashion.

I think Riley would have been a good hire 5 years ago, but that one is still a head scratcher for me.

I think the correct answer is neither.

Nebraska thrived on better athletic facilities and supreme weightlifting and conditioning. Now almost every team has that. They have great fan support but no recruiting base.

Miami is the exact opposite. They thrived on the rich recruiting grounds of south florida. But other teams have been cherry picking for years now. Miami doesn't have great fans or a ton of support.

If you could combine the two, it would be the perfect beast.

Nebraska. Better facilities, better fan base, better conference and more money in the program.

Arkansas had all of those things under Petrino, borders Texas, and still couldn't reel in a class remotely as talented as Miami.

Both of those schools need an assistant or even head coach with very deep Texas ties. Does Nebraska have any top recruiters on the staff?
