NBAPA wants NBA to use new TV money to cover health insurance for former players

The NBA is flush with new television revenue, and the players association has come up with one uplifting way to spend it. The NBAPA is hoping to use the new TV money to get health insurance coverage for former players, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. The plan would cost between $10-15 million per year.
The league is aiming to offer three separate health care options to former players, according to Wojnarowski. Michele Roberts, the new head of the NBAPA, was reportedly moved by stories of former players being unable to afford basic health care needs after years of sacrificing their bodies for the good of the league. The union is reportedly ready to pass the plan and start covering former players soon.
The league's new TV money will come into effect in 2016, and will give the NBA $2.6 billion. The salary cap is set to explode starting next season, which means an increase in both team revenue and player salaries. Now some of this money will be set aside for former players who helped make the NBA what it is before so much new cash entered the league.

It's nice to see a players union look out for their retired players unlike another sports league.

would not shock me to learn that an NFL plan would be 10-20x as expensive

Only reason why the NBA should do this is because right now it's rich as frick.

I know this may come as a shock to you, but not every former NBA player made tens of millions over the course of their career.

I thought better of your knowledge of the game, mate. Players weren't all wealthy in the 70's and even the 80's.
And even when they made tons of money - there are lots of "intelligent" former athletes who are now reportedly broke: Christian Laettner, Mark Brunell, Mike Tyson, Latrell Spreewell, Curt Schilling, Bernie Kosar, even Dan Marino and Jim Kelly have had some financial issues.

well aware. But if you only played say a few years in the league at the league minimum, that's still a few hundred thousand. You don't know how to set that aside and then find a job when you leave the league, then that's your own damn fault.
Also begs the question of should a player like that be entitled to the same benefits as a 10 year vet.

Why are you turning this into a race thing?

yeah but there aren't nearly as many intelligent (notice the lack of quotes) former athletes.

"a few hundred thousand" is not very much money, especially when you've presumably been great at bball your entire life and have been so close to multimillionaire teammates for several years.
you could blow through that REAL quick.

Why should I give a flying frick if they are white or black?
Posted on 7/6/15 at 10:03 pm to Jcorye1
i thought somebody said or implied black players. if not than i obviously fricked up and apologize. i added a few intelligent black athletes who have had financial problems to make up for it.

Which is why I don't feel bad for them. Look, I get it, they're living your dream, playing ball, making good money, etc. But they have to understand (and they're all shown the numbers from their pre or post draft player orientation shite) that doesn't last and they have to save. I respect guys like Alfred Morris who drove a used car around even after he got paid and countless examples of guys who get jobs in the offseason to help not only with a little extra cash but also to help make themselves employable after it's all over.
ETA: I hope this deal is done because it's great for the former players. The sacrificing their body for the good of the league part is laughable. But the fact that so many of them can't afford BASIC health care says more about them after they retire than what the league does for them.

I can see those coverages being the top tier so most of them would opt out and not force them to pay over half the coverage. That's what most companies are doing. Hell my old company it would cost 360 a month for family with about 5k deductible. Going on my own its 400 with 2k deductible.

The 2 aren't mutually exclusive.

You're right. Pity was probably too strong a word to use. I was mostly mocking the article with my first comment because it said "sacrificing for the good of the league" like they are military vets.

Kyrie gonna bankrupt the league

Truly amazing what the NBA PA is able to pull off
Meanwhile the NFLPA is wondering how the NFL convinced them that they we're losing money
