Another way to look at it, big market team has a Lebron or Curry or Durant with a huge salary.
Maybe they do find a way to get Simmons on a 4 year $40 or $50 or $60mil deal. But most youngsters aren't blossoming legitimately oil year 3 and even after 4 years, they are just hitting their stride. So then what? That team that already has Curry can't also now afford another "max" player, so they really only get 2 great years out of him before they either lose him or they gut their team to play with 2 stars and then a bunch of older vets.
I just feel like you guys are making it sound like the big market teams get the best 5 players in the draft every year and keep them for 10 years, which is impossible, that's the point. The entire system almost dictates that the best players have to be spread out. Now to your or the other guy's point about the NBA being at its best when a team dominates, that's true and i'm not even against that. I'm just throwing out an alternate idea that would give more true parity than the current system IMO.

Yea let's make the NBA even more top heavy! Great idea!
Huh? Do you know what "hard cap" means?
And before really giving this idea much thought, I don't think it's a bad idea and would definitely make being a GM tougher

quote:So now, who gets all the good players in the next 3 drafts since those teams are capped out?
Take LA. They just opened up salary after the Kobe era is done. Under your scenario Simmons, who already wanted to go to LA, just signs with them. They need some more pieces so maybe they look to add Hield. Boston is cap rich and Ingram is right there. They want some big man help so they sign Bender to go along with him. NY and Brooklyn both look to fast forward their rebuilds and they snag Murray, Dunn and Brown between them. SA likes international guys so they entice Luwawu to sign with them.
Also, let's say for LAL, they sign Simmons and Hield to 4 year, friendly deals. It's very unlikely those 2 guys are leading LAL to serious success in their 1st 4 seasons. Now let's say after 4 seasons it's apparent that Simmons is going to be top 1-3 elite best player in the NBA talent and Hield is top 15. Now LAL probably can't afford to keep both, right? Maybe they keep 1, let 1 walk and just by having to pay Simmons $30-35mil/year after 4 seasons, they have to shed a ton of other salary as well to be able to keep him.
Or maybe they figure out how to keep both, but they don't have very many other good pieces they can afford, and they certainly can't afford any more top level rookies for the next few seasons.

1) you're assuming all those rookies pan out to be good players
2) there's a year after that, then another after that. etc. So LA gets the rookies this year, someone else does next year

quote:Never even considered that. Overspend on 3 rookies who don't pan out, you're screwed for a few seasons on their deals.

quote:Right. Even if 2 or 3 of your rookies hit, you can't afford to keep them all due to the hard cap in the ensuing seasons.
