World cup and by a huge margin. It's the largest sporting event in the world. For anyone who's traveled and watched games outside of the US it's really obvious how big the WC is. It's turned into one of my favorite sporting events.
Soccer is played in nearly every country on the planet. Golf is nonexistent in large portions of the planet. Take Africa as en example. Besides South Africa, the entire continent gives zero shits about golf. They are rabid about soccer though.
These numbers put it in perspective.

With an average of 4.1 million people watching, ESPN’s live telecast of the 2012 Masters Tournament on Friday, April 6, was the most-viewed Friday coverage ever for The Event and the third-largest audience ever to watch golf on cable.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ was shown in every single country and territory on Earth, including Antarctica and the Arctic Circle, generating record-breaking viewing figures in many TV markets around the world. The in-home television coverage of the competition reached over 3.2 billion people around the world, or 46.4 per cent of the global population, based on viewers watching a minimum of over one minute of coverage. This represents an eight per cent rise on the number of viewers recorded during the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™.

I watched WC '94 with some Euro-folk when I was stationed in Spain. I knew next to nothing about soccer. My Irish buddy assured me that Colombia was going to destroy the U.S. Until they didn't. We were hosting the WC for the first time, and pulled off one of the biggest upsets in our footballing history. I wore my Stars n' Stripes with pride, and became a student of the game. You have to see it from outside the U.S. to gain a global perspective, but I can tell you that the game has grown in popularity in this country by leaps and bounds. Golf is fun, but on the global scale, it's a drop in the bucket compared to soccer.

Who do you think pulls more tail world wide: dude who claims to have won a major or dude who was on a WC winning side?

Dude who was on a WC winning side. They can pull tail from anyplace on the planet.
Look at the wives and girlfriends of Euro2012 players as proof.

It's true. I was in Prague, Czech Republic this summer and hockey is actually just slightly more popular than soccer. They love their soccer but they also love the NHL.
It's pretty big in Russia and Sweden as well.

I just love the "'Murica" loving gumps coming in here to to tell us that an American golf event is bigger than the biggest event for the biggest sport on the planet.
I don't even like soccer, but this is a no brainer.

I don't doubt that. That said, I bet the average Russian and Swede would take their country winning the World Cup over their favorite team winning the Stanley Cup.

Those competitions could not be further apart. Personally I would rather win a Major, I am solely responsible for the win. Although on a global scale soccer is much more prestigious. Also are you a superstar or a bench warmer, major PGA competitor or Francis Ouimet?

In the US a major..rest of the world, World Cup

I would choose winning a major golf tournament the way Francis Ouimet won over everything. Especially back in that day.
Such a bad arse book, and also a great movie.

In a debate with my roommate right now, what would be more prestigious to win, a major golf tournament or a World Cup?
Sounds like a debate for Stephen A. and Alexis Lalas...

Winning a major is amazing, but there are 4 majors per year. You get one World Cup every 4 years! Jack Nicklaus won 18 majors. Pele won 3 World Cups. I honestly don't even think they are comparable.

. I can't ever see that many people showing up to celebrate a golfer winning the Masters. Nothing compares to Wimbledon.
yet the TV rating record for ESPN, yes, record, for Wimbledon is 2.9
the viewership for the Masters last year was down 22%, its lowest since 2004, and still drew an 8.1
this isnt the 80's or 90s bro.

I think you would get a better split if you asked a Russian or Swede if they would rather win the world cup or either the gold medal or world championships in hockey.
But my first post was just mentioning which one I would rather win. Nothing about my post hinted at prestige.
