In prestige or sheer numbers? Isn't the Master's one of the smallest major fields?

I think being a star player on a World Cup team is also much more prestigious.

An individual gets 3 (maybe 4 if they're lucky) opportunities to play in a World Cup. A quality golfer may get 40+ chances at a major. I'm not sure why some are really trying to debate this.

That's why I said Masters probably beats benchwarmer on WC team. But what about a the leading goalscorer, best player, captain, or finals winning goal scorer on a WC winning team?

Who can name the roster of the last WC winners? (w/o the aid of the internet!)

These guys were definitely on Spain in 2010:
Xavi
Iniesta
Xabi Alonso
Sergio Ramos
Pedro

Cesc Fabregas
Jesus Navas
Fernando Torres
David Villa
Sergio Busquets

Alvaro Arbeloa
Gerard Pique
Carles Puyol
Iker Casillas
David Silva

Raul Albiol
Capdevila

Probably on the roster (at least one of the goalies is for sure):
Pepe Reina
Juan Mata
Victor Valdes

Not sure about the last three, but I would have to guess Javi Martinez, Fernando Llorente, and ???

+1. 100,000 people showed up in Serbia to give Novak Djokovic a hero's welcome after he won Wimbledon in 2011. That's how big the tournament is worldwide. I can't ever see that many people showing up to celebrate a golfer winning the Masters. Nothing compares to Wimbledon.

Carlos Marchena is the one you're missing but rest is correct.

Damn, not too shabby. That was the first time I really got into soccer. It has been among my favorite sports since. Some of the guys were just logical guesses like Mata and Javi because I have never heard of them at the time, but now I know they are fricking ill.

Just thinking about the nature of the sports themselves makes a comparison ridiculous.

90% of the world will never even have access to a golf club. The pool for soccer is infinite.

Only a true golf fan would even be able to name one of the four reigning major winners. Half the world, third world included, could tell you Spain are the defending champs.

This thread should really have been locked on page 1.

I was referring to yearly tournaments in individual sports. Wimbledon is the most prestigious tournament in an individual sport by a country mile. Nothing comes close to it.

Same. I watched the 06 World Cup but didn't really get into it until the 2010 World Cup and now I watch it all the time.

I've barely traveled outside the southeast. I can name quite a few players on the Spain WC team. I can't for sure name more than 3 people that have won a major in the last 10 years.

"not be personally remembered."

Quick, name the American who won the 2004 British Open. Think he is famous anywhere outside of his hometown in this country?

I'd rather win a World Cup than a Super Bowl.
