Just part of the negotiations. It allows the player to avoid playing in a place in which they don't want to play.
Yet, when actually exercises, it could make for a strange relationship.

how/why a player gets specific teams listed in a no-trade clause?

they request it during negotiations... sometimes it is just their preference that they do not want to play for those teams. Some do it just so they can't be traded without consent. Some may do certain teams because of family and they don't want to be moved from a certain area/region.

Lucroy says he wants to play for a contender and then vetoes a trade to Cleveland.

I'd be shocked if 'playing for a competitor' had anything to do with it.

It was pretty widely known that unless Cleveland offered him a pay raise he was likely to reject.

He wanted them to void the club option for next season.

Which obviously they won't do as it severely reduced trade value. They will just trade him somewhere else.

Bertrand a great fit in pretty much any contender. I bet he gets moved today.

Derek Norris is IMO the other lock today.

Some of the relievers etf might make it through waivers next month

I do not want Beltran or McCann.

Yeah BM hits you 20+ bombs, but he is terrinle against lefties and still have like two years on his deal. We are already lefty heavy in our line-up.

Beltran I could see, but we aren't giving up Profar for him when he essentially is Carlos Beltran, 20 years younger and can still actuall play all over the field.

Lucroy will still be our No.1 guy I would assume.

His club option is only for $5.2 mil next year. He wants and deserves to be paid.

You'll take Derek Fisher for Beltran and like it.

Just looking at catcher salaries. Russell Martin is going to make $20 million next year as a 34 year old catcher (he's currently hitting .233). I'd demand a gigantic pay raise if I were Lucroy.

Yankees are going to eat a significant portion of that contract if they trade him.

I understand that, and it only makes sense. It is just funny that he makes a statement about wanting to play for a contender.

I wonder how much money the Tribe were offering in bonuses. Cause I understand him wanting out of that option year, but now the Brewers will trade him to someone not on his no-trade list and they'll exercise the option with no additional incentive.

He overestimated the hammer he was carrying in negotiations. Should have just juiced the Tribe management out of as much as he could and then go play ball.

Last year Cole Hamels said he was open to anybody and wouldn't veto a trade. The power was in the front offices hands. Then he vetoed a trade to the Astros. It happens.

ahoo’s Jeff Passan reports (via Twitter) that Lucroy asked the Indians to void his 2017 club option in order to hit the open market at the end of the season in order to approve the deal (Twitter link). Understandably, Cleveland was in no way willing to meet that request, as the option is a significant factor in Lucroy’s value to the club. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, meanwhile reports that the Indians weren’t promising Lucroy that he’d be their starting catcher in 2017, which gave him pause in approving the deal. Cleveland planned to rotate Lucroy between catcher, first base and DH in 2017.
