Now what Los Angeles? The Jaguars?
quote:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) The Minnesota Vikings moved to within a governor's signature of getting a new $975 million stadium on Thursday after the state Senate approved a plan that relies heavily on public financing.

Gov. Mark Dayton has said he'll sign the measure, meaning the Senate's 36-30 vote was effectively the final barrier for the stadium. The House passed it overnight.

After the Senate vote, jubilant Vikings vice president Lester Bagley hugged another team official and shouted, ''Let's build it!'' Vikings fans broke out singing the ''Skol Vikings'' fight song and the Senate president admonished them to take it outside the chamber.

The team chased a new stadium for more than a decade but had little leverage until its lease expired this past year on the 30-year-old Metrodome. Dayton led a newly urgent charge for the team, arguing that without a new building the state could lose its most beloved franchise.

The deal guarantees the Vikings' future in Minnesota for three decades.

Los Angeles is nothing more than a chimaera, a cudgle that Das Fuhrer Goodell can use against markets to make sure they give their teams subsidies and build new mega-stadiums.

Did they keep the no-blackout provision in the bill?

I thought so, but the stache seems to be willing to really spend to make the team and facilities better

Khan is also putting about $10 million into locker room and weight room improvements at the stadium and said money will not be a factor in the discussion of whether to build a practice bubble. The issue was highlighted recently when the Jaguars had to move a minicamp practice indoors on the club level because a storm soaked the practice fields.

kahn opens the wallet

I'd like to see the Rams head back out there personally...they're already in the right division and it just seems right. Jville is going to be a huge market as people begin to move to Florida again (tons of undeveloped land and great spot at intersection of I10 and 95). I think in a city like Jacksonville there almost needs to be a generation or so of fans who grow up there who aren't fans of the Steelers or Jets or whoever to really increase the season ticket base.

Good news everyone

A one billion dollar price tag on the public dime so billionaires can make higher profits.

I wish it was constitutional to outlaw public financing of sports

Probably so, but it doesn't make it right imo. Bass Pro Shop got all kinds of advantages to build a brand new store in Denham Springs that most competitors could only dream of.

don't compare a Bass Pro Shop to a NFL franchise. NFL stadium's bring in money that goes far beyond football. There are only 42 of them, and they can move to cities that will support them better financially. The NFL has no competition.

The New Orleans deal was a win-win financially, and I'm sure this one will be too.

I think New Orleans might have done well but only because having a NFL team allows them to continue to host Super Bowls on a pretty regular basis.

When a city or state is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to finance keeping a NFL team it is hard to make that much money back. But there is a cottage industry of lobbyists for NFL teams who try to obscure this point.

I have absolutely no idea if this is a good deal for Minnesota. You just put a blanket statement over it though.

well that was part of the cost benefits. Super Bowl's, final four's conventions, etc. bring in so much money. Then you have to take the direct impact the team has on the state. I want to say over the course of the new deal, the state came out $27 billion ahead

luckily, Louisiana built a stadium that should last quite some time.

I think that is probably very muddy cost-benefit analysis

New Orleans is a convention city and even if the Saints left they would continue to have Bourbon Street, Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest etc

And the outflow of money is considerable even though people don't like to talk about it. There's not only the Superdome but also picking up the tab on things like the Benson Towers in New Orleans.

I would guess that we break even or come out slightly ahead but could easily believe it comes out the other way around if you accounted for all of the outflows and crony capitalism behind the scenes

Benson bought Benson Tower from the State (very cheap). It needed millions of dollars in renovations and was just rotting away.

I'll see if I can find it on old computer when I get home.

I think the state comes out WAY ahead. New Orleans may be a convention city, but without the dome we wouldn't be able to hold the ones that generate the most money. I can't imagine how much money I spend in New Orleans every year for Saints games

Benson bought the Dominion tower from Judah Hertz, not the state. The state and city just sweetened the deal by offering to lease part of the tower for it's own operations. Considering the state and city would have to lease these offices from
somewhere anyway, the state didn't really lose anything, but gained a ton. It was just a great business plan by Jindels administration.

Why in the world does that thing cost so much?
The Seahawks' stadium was only like $300 million and it's one of the best in the NFL.

Thats smart government as long as you can afford it. Building a football stadium or other kind of sports arena thats going to get paid for is smart. Just like the tax breaks for the Louisiana film industry
