I didn't watch the movie. How far above the Pirates' farm system did he make it before the injury? Double A?

PEDs are the source of all these issues.

I haven't seen it either. Looks like he was in the SAL (Low A) last season.

Just need to pitch every couple of days like Nolan Ryan did, keep the arm active.

Yes. I mean it seems to be an interesting story. I'm not really bashing on the subject of the film. This TJ surgery has become an epidemic. HS kids are getting this more and more. I'd really like to hear from Drs why this seems to be happening at such a high rate compared to years ago. I mean, technology has made this into something that you can comeback and play at a high level, but just why is it necessary?

Sure but that's kind of like saying Blind Side is a movie about a mediocre right tackle.

He was actually pretty good. So far career ERA in minors is under 3.

To add to my edited post above, are we (youth coaches) failing at something when they are kids? I know it seems that few kids long toss much anymore, but I still have my kids do it. Is there a mechanical flaw causing this? Is it overuse? I'm not one of these coaches that just let kids throw 100 pitches in a game. I'd never allow that. Just curious.

Is it as simple as kids are throwing harder at an earlier age than ever before?

I think sometimes sports progress faster than human bodies. That's what was happening in new school skiing a few years ago, where many of the top athletes were dying on the slopes or ending up in comas. It's still a big issue, but there are ways to mitigate the problems. For example, building the courses so speed isn't as high, etc.

With baseball, perhaps you lower the mound?

“It’s because pitchers simply don’t throw as much as we did,” Ryan replied. “That’s the real issue here. When I pitched, we pitched every fourth day and guys would pitch 300 innings and it wasn’t considered a big deal. If you don’t get on the mound and develop stamina, you’re risking injury. This whole thing with the 100-pitch count limit — I have a real problem with that. Pitchers are all different and when you put standard limitations on them, you’re not utilizing their talent.”

Ryan's theory has support from Tommy John. The namesake of the elbow ligament transplant surgery many star pitchers are getting, John believed that reducing today's pitching workload isn't doing any current hurlers any favors and is critical of those who still believe it.

Nolan Ryan is a HOF and a freak of a talent but he has no idea what he is talking about medically. He was an anomaly. None of those old pitchers can pick their arm above their head. Watch a professional team warm up, 20 bucks says you won't see a former major leaguer throwing BP.

Shoulder injuries have gone down tremendously thanks to monitoring pitchcounts and the like.

I think the problem is guys throwing so hard. Its incredible the amount of high school and college arms that are in the 90's.

Fully agreed on your assessment of Nolan Ryan.

The solution is not getting guys to throw 140 pitches every 4 days. He is just a freak, like Michael Phelps or Usain Bolt, where normal rules don't apply.

Bolt ate nothing but fast food in the week preceding both Olympics. I don't think anyone is suggesting we force feed our Olympians with McDonalds before they compete.

There was a pretty good article posted last week about it. Seems like it's mostly guys wanting to throw so hard now, they develop mechanics that put more stress on the elbow. It's probably not the only reason, but it doesn't help

This. I had a joke lined up about Tom Brady and advanced drag physics, but I let it slide.
