Mike Mayock: I'd be scared to death to draft QB in top 10 this year

Clemson's Deshaun Watson, North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky and Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer are considered three of the most promising options in a relatively weak pool of draftable quarterbacks, and NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock left little doubt about whether any of them merit a top-10 selection in the draft.

"All three of these quarterbacks, to me, I would be scared to death in the top 10," Mayock told The College Draft podcast.

Mayock addressed concerns on each of Watson, Trubisky and Kizer. Whether Watson has the ability to maintain accuracy when his first read is not open, particularly while remaining in the pocket, is among the questions NFL clubs will want answered about him, per Mayock. As for Trubisky, who was a backup at UNC to Marquise Williams for two seasons prior to 2016, a lack of college experience for a one-year starter is a top concern.

"If (Trubisky is) so talented and gifted, and a top-10-type pick, one of the first questions a lot of teams are asking is, why couldn't he beat out Marquise Williams the last couple years at North Carolina? What's the answer to that one?," Mayock said.

"The problem I have is that (Kizer's) pocket mechanics seem to break down at the worst times. He got removed in the fourth quarter from two or three games last year. He got replaced at Stanford, he got replaced at USC. I've watched five of his games so far, and in almost every game at critical times, the pocket mechanics, the feel in the pocket, the decisions you're making with the football, seems to break down when the team needs him the most."

Who the hell knows? I thought Ryan Leaf would be better than Peyton. Wonder what Mayock would say about this guy.

If my team needed a QB, and they're not far from one, I wouldn't hesitate to pick Watson. The others I have no ideas about.

DeShone Kizer wasn't even good in college. I can't believe ppl are talking about him going in the first round

My favorite yearly scouting report:

"He doesn't have great numbers and struggled winning games but he's got a big arm that can make all the throws"

He also might be a loser. The only ranked team he quarterbacked them to a win against was Navy and if you're a ND QB it's your birthright to beat Navy.

I'd draft Watson, but Trubisky is 2nd or 3rd round material, and Kizer would probably be looking free agency right down the barrel if he didn't play for ND.

There's no sure thing at QB this year, that's for sure.

Watson out of all of those, but who knows.

Kizer is the most baffling to me. Reminds me of Logan Thomas from VA tech

He was not good at all. And got much, much worse in pressure situations in games and when the pocket collapsed.

Those are two terrible qualities.

I'd take Watson though. Kid is a fricking gamer and has all of the tools. He's smart, talented arm, great size, athletic, hard working, not fragile, etc.

He isn't a "start right away" guy, but I think he's a got a good future in the league.

Kizer is dumb for leaving early, but I think he has potential to have a good a year as Dak did this year if he gets put in the right situation. He was not playing in a good situation with Brian Kelly calling plays. He has a big arm to all areas of the field, beautiful touch, and can get out of the pocket. He does tend to panic and throw some INT's in the red zone, and he over corrected his pocket presence and started standing in the pocket too long towards the end of the season leading to a few sacks. Overall though, I think he is the best QB in this draft (not saying a lot though).

ETA: For all those claiming he "sucks" go bump the Notre Dame v. Texas thread and see how many people were saying he is a lock top 10 pick.

LOL at the "Kizer wasn't good in college" groupthink going on in here. He had a better YPA and TD-INT ratio last year than Watson, who many here love. This was also done with a worse supporting cast.

All 3 QBs are talented but have question marks. There won't be a consensus ranking of the 3.

Shocking, coming from a Notre Dame fan.

Yes. And also take note of how many people were saying Texas is back in that thread.

I would rather trade for Jimmy G. I wouldn't draft any of these QBs in the first round.
