My Dad was 30 years military. One of my five brothers came out to him. My Dad asked him are you still (fill in name) ? He said yes, and my Dad said I still love you. It was astonishing to all.

I truly hope you have a gay son.

Is saying I hope he does not end up in Green Bay really that hateful? If so you have a low bar for judging what is and is not hate.

If i had a gay son, id hope he would be an NFL football player.

There are much more embarrassing "professions" & public displays that would disappoint me more.

anyone think he should've waited til he got drafted before coming out?

No way! He played it just right. Even the stupid text to his Dad. It's a made for t.v. event - the reunion. Or else, the poor disowned gay football schlub.

Our popular society LOVES a victim! The fact that a team can draft this guy and win the Public Relations game by being au courant and sensitive will get them huge bonus points in the media.

Sam Sr., who described himself as "old-school," told the newspaper the idea of a gay player in the NFL bothers him, even when that person could be his own son.

Yep I agree with his dad on this. You still love your son but cant agree with his life style.

Have told my teen age son that he can do nothing to increase or decrease my love and commitment to him. He is my son and that trumps everything else.

However pride and/or shame he will have the ability to influence.

Sitting here thinking if I would be ashamed of him if he was gay. I know I would be much happier and prouder to introduce him as my son to others if he was not gay. So yeah, I guess there would be some element of shame in that situation.

Parents are usually the last to be told. Common practice is to build a support network of friends before telling your parents in case things go south(with your parents).

Coming out letters were popular in the past. Now, texting and facebook posts are popular methods of letting people know.

Friends tell me the worst rejection anyone can experience is rejection by your parents. You will care about their approval and love if they raised you. Its easier to send them a text and let them cool off a bit before talking to them.

I've heard too many stories to judge anyones method of coming out.

I would be disappointed too if my son were to text me that he was gay. But I wouldn't mention it. To anyone. Especially not a journalist. He should support his son as any good father would.

Sam's father took the news hard. He said he was eating at a Denny's restaurant but had to leave after receiving the text. "I couldn't eat no more, so I went to Applebee's to have drinks," Sam Sr. told the newspaper. "I don't want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment."
