Merrill Hoge: Winston reminds me of Byron Leftwich, he has a lumbering skillset

He also called him fat. Hoge has been pretty spot on with his evaluation of college QBS in recent years so it's interesting to hear that he doesn't think much of Winston at all. LINK

very legit comparison. I'd say Jameis is a bit better than byron though.

I have a hard time taking that dude seriously.

Leftwich was slow as molasses and the 2nd to slowest delivery of all time. (Tebow)

He does this shite every year with every high profile prospect. Im no Jameis fan, but frick Merrill Hoge. That dude is just a bitter never-was.

Has he? Other than obvious things like "Jimmy Clausen sucks", what has he done that proved to be true?
Not saying you're wrong, I just haven't noticed. He also did say RG3 was a better prospect than Luck.

He said that Matt Leinart and Vince Young will be epic busts and Jay Cutler will turn out to be the best QB of the draft in 2006. He was pretty spot on with that prediction.

Yeah, it's hard to overlook that blown call.

Hard to speak of the what if's if RGIII had been with the Colts from day 1. Could RGIII have put up similar numbers had he stayed healthy with Colts. I don't think its arguable its very possible. But certainly Luck has earned his nod over RGIII over how their careers have turned out with different organizations.

Two years ago Hoge said Flacco was the best QB in the NFL.

FTR, I don’t think Jameis will amount to much in the NFL. He’ll be a starter for a little while somewhere, but I don’t see a team sticking with him long term.
Here’s why:
- He’s a moron
- He’s immature
- He has bad mechanics
- He is very turnover prone
- He forces throws in college that won’t fly in the pros
- He was surrounded by better talent than his competition 90% of the time in college
- He’s “larger” and has the frame to increase that trend
- He has miserable eye sight
- He has a completely sideways pinky on his throwing hand
- He is a Jimbo Fisher QB. Jimbo is like a QB Whisperer. They are awesome under him and not-so-awesome in the pros.
- Did I mention he’s an immature moron who’s about to get millions of dollars?
When you draft a QB that high, you are essentially drafting a “Franchise QB”. Who is last franchise QB who is both immature and a moron? Would you want Jameis Winston being the face of your team?
Lets look at the “Franchise QB’s” that are upper echelon in the pros (in no order):
- Tom Brady
- Peyton Manning
- Aaron Rodgers
- Drew Brees
- Russell Wilson
- Phillip Rivers
- Matt Ryan
- Andrew Luck
What do they all have in common? Its not arm strength, its not great size, its not great athleticism. They are all mature and intelligent (maybe besides Rivers).
Now, I would certainly risk a mid/late first on Jameis, but not a top 3 pick “Franchise QB” pick. I don’t hate the kid nor am I rooting against him, but I just don’t think his career is going to be worth a top 3 pick.

That's fair.
I missed on Leinart. Thought he'd have a solid career.
I think everyone in the SEC knew Cutler was going to be a big time NFL player.

How am I rooting against him? I'm just saying why I wouldn't ever draft him top 3.
If the Saints drafted him top 3, I'd be pissed off as a motherfricker.

its ok to root against that raper.

frick, i hate agreeing with that douche. But I said the same for a year now. Good understanding of passing schemes, good arm, but heavy footed and a windup that goes from 7:00 back to 12:00. He'll have alot of balls stripped when he drops back.
I was dismissed as just comparing him to another black QB, but I really think it's legit.
