Playing in the NFL means you need a certain level of maturity. From the very beginning Manziel has shown how immature he was. Take Cam Newton for example. Big spotlight on him, roughly same age. Some say his on field antics are immature, but look where he's at now. 10-0 and playing the best football of his career. Johnny never grew up and made the sacrifices necessary to play the game.

This is also Cam's 5th year in the NFL while Johnny is in his 2nd.

Also, Carolina has a coaching staff that has played Cam from day 1 instead of one that looks for any reason possible to play journeymen QBs who do little more than bump them further back in the draft.

No. But if he gave me guidelines to follow and I didn't follow them, he would be within his right to fire me.

I'll grant you that it's overblown.

But it's overblown because he puts himself in these positions. Over and over again. And he never learns how to keep a low profile. Not even to save his own skin.

Good to know that you don't need NFL talent to throw for 372 yards and a td on 73% passing.

I think Pettine has a problem with him anyway. He won't be coach for long though.

I said it on the A&M board but the guy has been looking for excuses to not play him from pretty much the moment he was drafted.

I agree. I'm not even a JM fan, but Pettine seems like a douchebag.

The guy was in rehab.

That's pretty close to an admission of having a drinking/drug problem.

Additionally, the guy has shown an inability to control his decisions despite his promises to do otherwise. That is an indication of substance abuse.

People with substance abuse problems can't just go and relax and have a few drinks. That's not the way it works. He hasn't accepted the fact that he has a problem. And, it's going to cost him his career as a result if something doesn't change.

You're saying that you dont need to be mentally prepared to play at a high level? And no, he has not shown "legit" growth.

He can party all he wants during the offseason. If you are the starting QB of a NFL franchise you need to keep a low profile and work on your game even during the bye week.

Except that in this case the Browns didn't fire him (cut him), they simply demoted him. And he can't do anything about it. If you were to be unfairly demoted you have the option to seek employment elsewhere. Manziel can't go to another team unless the Browns cut him. I understand that employers have guidelines that need to be followed but something like this that tells you how you can or can't spend your free time would not make it in a normal industry where employees have freedom to go to competitors.

About 30% of all adults between 18-34 binge drink about 4 times per month (every weekend).

I'd imagine that percentage is a helluva lot higher for 18-34 males who are also millionaires without 9-5 jobs.

No argument there, but JM keeps putting himself in a position to fail unlike every QB on an NFL roster, with the exception of Ryan Mallet. JM is just a less tardy Ryan Mallet.

Interesting. You think rehab shifted the story rather than the story being that he needed rehab? His "drinking problem" is a result of the rehab...not the other way around?

Have we seen anything to show us Manziel needs rehab anymore than Gronk? Maybe I'm wrong but everything so far shows he's just a 22 year old partyboy.
If he was pounding a bottle of Jack every night at his house or sneaking vodka into the locker room he needs rehab. If anything like this happened the Browns will be leaking it to the media before they cut him so we'll know.

And I bet you the veterans of the league (3+ years) dont fit into that category. Which is why they are still playing. Work hard, play hard when the time is right.
