Manning is the greatest free agent pick up in NFL history

He went to a team that was 8-8 the year before and had been pretty much irrelevant for 13 years. In his 4 years, he helped the team accomplish the following:
- Best regular season record over that time period
- 3 #1 seeds and a #2 seed
- Highest scoring offense in NFL history, most TD passes, etc.
- 1 league MVP and should have had a second in 2012 (came in second)
- 2 first team All-Pro seasons
- 2 AFC championships and trips to the Super Bowl
- One terribly played deep bomb away from making it to a 3rd AFC championship in 4 years and possibly onto the super bowl (that 2012 team was the easily the most complete and balanced in Manning's tenure there)
- 1 Super Bowl ring
I know he didn't contribute a whole lot to the victory last night, but his presence attracted other great players, like Demarcus Ware. It also created pressure for Elway to do whatever it took to win while that short window was open. It was such a strange turn of events to get him out of Indy and available as a free agent that we are unlikely to ever see the like again.
Now please retire, Peyton.

Drew Brees did more for New Orleans.

Over a 10 year period, hard to match what Drew has done. But he never had a 4 year stretch like Manning and missed the playoffs too often. Brees was obviously a great free agent pick up, but few outside of Louisiana would put it over Manning.

Manning hasn't had qb stretches like Drew actually.

This is a very good point. It's something not brought up enough when you begin talking about the intrinsic value of certain coaches and QBs in the league.
While his individual play last night didn't reflect superior performance, his gravitas has attracted several key players even after The Seattle debacle.
Gold star for you.

Reggie White was a great pickup for GB

Kurt Warner went to the Rams as a free agent. They had a nice run with him.

I seriously doubt that's the case. I'm willing to bet plenty would, considering it is over a much longer period of time, what he meant to the franchise beyond football, etc.

This is almost unarguable. On so many levels beyond statistics.

Are we forgetting what AP did that season?

Ehhhh, Manning wasn't that great in that game. Holiday was the only reason we kept getting points. Manning threw a bad pass that cost the game. That 2012 wasn't better than the 2015 team and I'd take the 2013 team too.

Nope. That would still be Reggie White to Green Bay.

Nope, it still be Drew to Nola

Manning was 28-43 for 290 yards and 3 touchdowns in that game against a very good defense that went on to win the super bowl. He threw two picks, but the first went right through Eric Dicker's hands. Why? Because the defender was yanking Decker's arm down before the ball got there. It was a 2006 LSU-Auburn pass interference no-call type situation, and that interception was returned for a touchdown. So that alone should have meant the difference. They got completely hosed by a ref that had a long history of being a very shitty ref. The second interception was in a double overtime that should have never happened. Basically one bad pass that shouldn't have even been necessary and you say he wasn't great in that game?

Context is key here
Brees was a huge gamble (He was in a sling when he was introduced into his press conference) and paid off immensely.
Everyone knew what Manning was bringing to the table

Are you serious? Do you honestly not recall the great debate back then? There was serious concern that Manning would not be able to throw the ball at all at an NFL level or that he could hold up to getting hit. That debate continued well into the 2012 season as they began 2-3. His 3 pick game against the Falcons in week 2 or 3 had many calling for him to retire right then and there. His return to dominance was far from certain.

He had a show me contract that protected the team
Those were his only 3 picks in the first 5 weeks
Through 5 weeks:
300/game. 11 TDs/3 Ints. 66%

From an NFL.com article this morning that proves my point about attracting talent:
quote:
Some of his teammates said they hoped he would return, and linebacker Brandon Marshall voiced a truth about the Broncos: He was on the team because of Manning. A large part of the reason there is so much talent is because Manning was on the roster, acting as a magnet for veteran studs like DeMarcus Ware, who signed on when John Elway determined he had to build a better defense after the Broncos were blown out of the Super Bowl two years ago. Manning had spotted Marshall on the Broncos' practice squad in 2013 and he asked coaches who Marshall was, telling them they had to bring him up to the active roster. That is the sort of impact Manning was still able to make even as he receded from lead singer to part of the chorus this season, and it is an impact that likely will be gone very soon.

Way more.
And Reggie White is likely #2.
But Manning is certainly in the mix after that.
