It's the best version of this era's style of play and when the talent regresses back to the mean, for several reasons, such as injuries to promising players, players developed incorrectly and aging/retiring of current stars, the game will change again.
This. I don't know why the NBA, compared to other leagues, always gets heatedly debated about which generation was better.
The NBA is freaking awesome right now. It was awesome when Magic, Bird and Jordan were playing, too. It might be different, but enjoy the NBA for what it is at its best, regardless of the era.

dont tell some of these posters, they have edited highlight reals, advanced metrics that admittedly flawed (and I'm huge metrics guy) that swear Pippen sucks, it's only interesting during the conference finals, etc.

I've lost interest in the era vs. era debate over the past few years. I liked the NBA in the 90s, and I love it now. Pros and cons to both, all-time greats in both.

Wait till baseball is in full swing and the metrics are flying

Yeah, the "Pippen Sucks" argument is really funny.
That is so incredibly stupid, there are no words.
Pippen was overshadowed by Jordan, to be sure. And, he was not as good. But, he was really, really good and was a perfect compliment to Jordan.

Like McHale and Bird.

The problem is the "eye test" without any corroborating data, or worse yet, only contradicing data. If a person can only present their subjective view as evidence, then it's a poor argument.

The point being is that defense, even with some stats out there is still largely not quantifiable and then you change the limit of players can and can't do on the court. I laugh at the dismal of the toll the undeniably more phyical play (when players made contact) as opposed to all the rule changes that opened up the games flow nowadays, and the neophytes still claim that the players are superior. It's dishonest.because of the rules changes that effected strategy. .
The league ebbs and flows to the players abilities.

Today there are so many guys that can jump out of the gym.
In the 90's and before there weren't that many guys in the league like that.
Not every team had a 7 footer.
Raw talent is valued today a lot more than sound fundamentals. That's why a guy like Tim Duncan has had so much success.
He's what I would call a "throwback player".

blackballed because of the whole Muslim conversion thing
That's such BS, he got "blackballed" because he was a selfish dick who started doing anti American garbage to the point where everyone hated him. He was a great player, but not great enough for teams/fans to look past how crazy and wacko he had become.
The NBA doesn't give a shite what religion you are, does he know who Kareem-Abdul-Jabbar is?

I think the game is great right now.
I think this is kind of BS. It's even becoming more common to see big guys that can shoot (stretch 4).
Watch a Warriors or Hawks game.

80's & 90's NBA > Today
The NBA on NBC theme, the rivalries that actually meant something to cities as a whole, the physicality. I got the impression that not only were rival teams enemies on the court, but also off the court. Now everyone's just buddy-buddy with each other and talk crap over Twitter.

College and pro basketball are both watered down...

He says that he was essentially blackballed because of the Muslim conversion and that his best years were taken away from him.
He was blackballed because he was outwardly anti-American. Was his Muslim conversion part of that? Sure, but he is choosing how to remember that part of his past.
ETA - His Muslim conversion was part of acting anti-American, not him being "black-balled." At that point, he wasn't a good enough player to justify the baggage he kept piling on himself

quote:Holy shite you just described 90s 1 on 1 basketball.
I have seen the same thing that he is talking about. It has been going on for 15 years now. I was watching the Pacers-Grizzlies last night and saw it over and over again. One guy had the ball and 4 guys were standing around.

This is all correct, and I don't harbor any ill will to the guy. To this day, he's still the best college basketball player I've ever seen in person.
