George Gervin v KD

Two points here.
1- Obviously, he doesn't read the MSB.
2- Half the MSB are NBA coaches-in-waiting.

I'm thinking he equates having a complete game with having a midrange game. Basketball has come a long way since then from an analytical perspective.

The NBA plays a game today with no skilled big men, that's a fact.
Well except for that Anthony Davis guy.
But I do agree that the game doesn't have the 1-2 great centers

The biggest difference is the big men in 90's were dominate players.
The fact that you don't know the difference between dominant and dominate takes away from the fact that you make a good point.

Too many players are paid for athleticism. Why have the Spurs been so dominant? They're one of the few teams that play like team.

So, Can I be your video guy when you get that NBA gig?

That is exactly what I was thinking.
This board is laughable when it comes to this subject. I am going to go with the opinion of Rauf over anyone on this board.
I have seen the same thing that he is talking about. It has been going on for 15 years now. I was watching the Pacers-Grizzlies last night and saw it over and over again. One guy had the ball and 4 guys were standing around. The shot clock got down to 6 seconds and they tried to make something happen. Even the announcers were talking about it.
Of course, the elite players today are as good as the elite players 20 years ago. But, the game overall is much worse than it was back then and I don't even know why that is debatable. High School ball is worse. AAU ball has detrimentally affected development. College ball is much worse. Why should we think that the NBA is the only thing that will be better?
I don't know the ages of the people posting here, but if you didn't actually live and watch basketball in the 80's-90's, you really don't know what you are talking about. I was in high school and college then, but I watched the NBA then as well as now and it was a better game then.
Rauf is right.

Maybe it seems that way to you because you have no idea what you are talking about and you assess by a whole different metric than people who actually know what they are doing and who actually know the game?
I really can't believe that you said that.

As far as your point about 4 guys standing around. We have one man to thank for that-Allan Iverson

That's one of the main reasons why they changed the rules to what they are now. To encourage less iso basketball and encourage more passing.

quote:I'm not talking about coaching, I'm talking about evaluating the state of the overall game--helped by not having the self-serving bias the players have. Besides, their lack of objectivity, being a player =/= aptitude to evaluate the game. Just as an example, MJ is the greatest, but one of the worst executives.
So, Can I be your video guy when you get that NBA gig?

That is an absolutely horrible example of the current NBA game. The Pacers are shitty offensively and have to bleed clock to keep themselves in most games, and the Grizz played right into that. Go watch teams like Warriors, Spurs, Cavs, Hawks. Their respective schemes are more indicative of the league.

quote:I evaluate the game based on objective data, and can support my arguments with evidence. To many of the ex-players like objectivity and have nothing more than "gut-feelings." Not to mention, their statements often contradict the evidence. For example, people that say the game has changed and has become all ISO (as if it wasn't before), are contradicting the evidence. If they just read any Zach Lowe analysis, they would see that's categorically false.

Look, I am not arguing that the top teams today aren't very good. And, the top players today are very good too.
But, the state of the League as a whole is less than what it was 20 years ago because player development is less than it was. There is just a lot of bad basketball being played now. Look at the Eastern Conference. Most of the basketball is simply atrocious.

I just don't understand the logic that once a player has played in the NBA, they suddenly have all of this wisdom. I had coaches growing up who could run circles around tons of NBA players when it comes to discussing the game and evaluating play.
