Because to chip, you slow your swing down and stop it right after hitting the ball.

If you swing as hard as you can and hit the ball and some object prevents you from finishing your swing, it doesn't matter, you already hit the ball full force.

Okay, I know the ball didn't really touch his leg. I can't pretend to defend it any longer.

But the follow-through theory some of you came up with trying to liken it to a chip shot was not too smart.
