Kaepernick has apparently been rehabbing away from the team and sought a second opinion.

His guaranteed money is very low, only 10m or so left iirc, but if he's on the roster on April 4th his entire years pay is guaranteed.

quote:

The Daily News has learned that embattled 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick wants out of San Francisco after a forgettable 2015 that included on-field struggles that resulted in a benching midway through the season and a coaching change after it. The Jets are his preferred destination, according to sources.

The Jets, aware of Kaepernick’s desire to play for them, are intrigued, but still in the early stages of their offseason planning and evaluation, according to sources. They’re also deathly afraid of tampering (see: Darrelle Revis situation, circa 2015).

JETS COULD BE THINKING QB AT NFL DRAFT

General manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles have expressed their desire to re-sign impending free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick, but nothing is guaranteed. (The Jets and Fitzpatrick’s camp are expected to discuss an extension in the coming weeks).

Although Kaepernick wants to play in New York, he still has five years remaining on a blockbuster $114 million extension signed in 2014 that includes escape hatches for his current employer. The Jets, coming off a 10-win season, would have to trade for Kaepernick or wait until he’s cut.

The 49ers must make a decision to keep, trade or cut Kaepernick before April 1 when his 2016 base salary of $11.9 million becomes guaranteed. San Francisco would save $8.5 million by cutting Kaepernick, who is scheduled to have a $15.9 million cap charge this season.

Could just be a negotiating stance with Fitzpatrick though.

If there's any truth to this, I think he just hates the FO/Management so much that he's done.

He might have fricked the team over by having surgery that won't heal until after his contract hits it's guarantee date, meaning he can't be traded because he won't pass a medical, forcing them to cut him or pay him.

Dayum.... I hope he goes to the Jets.... He would do well there... With Brady and the Pats about to be done... The Jets could rule that division for the next 5 or so years......

Sounds logical... Replace a quarterback that threw for 31 TDs and led his team to their second-highest win total in the last decade.

There is absolutely no incentive for the NYJ to replace Ryan Fitzpatrick for Colin Kaepernick.

Hey I LOVE the bearded wonder and he did great last year... But why sign Kap where the money could go somewhere else more useful... They also have Smith as the back-up....

Welcome to the Mass Media.

1. "according to sources"
2. "according to more sources"
3. Nothing is happening "right now"
4. When it doesn't happen, it's because of "tampering"

Basically this is complete horseshite. And people laugh at shite from Bleacher Report.

But that won't stop this being a trending topic on all the sports networks tomorrow.

The power of the media: A newspaper in NYC just invented a story out of thin air with evidence about as thin as a runway model, and now everyone will talk about it.

Which is why it makes sense for this to be a jets leak. All about getting his agent to play ball. No idea how their negotiations are going, but it figures.

Geno Smith isn't an NFL level player. He's only there because they haven't gotten around to replacing him.

Fitzpatrick isn't under contract. He's 33. The Jets can't afford a franchise tag. They're only 10m under the cap and their rookie pool will cost 6m+. There are a ton of teams with room under the cap this year and they might not be able to afford to keep him.

People are high on Fitz because they like him. But he's not that great to just laugh off Kaepernick without question. The 49ers offense (especially the line and the coaching) was dogshit both with and without Kaepernick last year. Yet Fitz was only 10 points better in passer rating, and they completed about the same percentage of passes, but Kaepernick played in the NFC West in his worst season.

I know it's cool to hate on Kaepernick and say things like "the zone read has been figured out, he was just a running back who threw the ball, everyone needs to have a pocket passer and nothing else should be allowed", but you have to consider that this move would make sense for the jets for multiple reasons. In particular, Kaepernick's contract is actually one of the lowest for any QB on his second or third deal, he's much younger and he's got a ton of upside because of his legs.
