Yesterday, I watched a Jr High basketball game where a family member's son was playing and the coach had them pressing the whole game. They did okay at that and were trapping well and created a lot of turnovers. But, the pace was so frenetic that they never got in an offensive rhythm and turned the ball over themselves probably at least 40 times. It was the most horrendous display of basketball I have ever seen. The coach just kept yelling for them to press the whole time. But, being middle schoolers, they could not calm down on the offensive end and it was just chaos with horrible passing and terrible shot selection.

At that age, I think that the press can be helpful - some. But, you have to run an offense and play with fundamentals as well. Ideally, how should the press be used at that age and what is the best defense to run, in your opinion?

Middle school basketball is ugly no matter what style you play. Pressing at that age though takes advantage of the ugly.

It doesn't seem like actual basketball, though. It was more like chaos.

The team eventually lost the game, even though they were more talented by far. Discipline and focus won out over chaos.

The press being used constantly in jr high or lower level basketball is usually a sign of a coach more interested in winning games than teaching the game. There should be more teaching going on at that level.

I pressed all the time with a 6th grade team but I subbed out every 2 minutes. I was more interested teaching and getting all to play.

I would also play multiple zones 1-2-2, 2-3, 1-3-1, I would set my press different places Full Half or 3/4. We didn't have issue with offense as we didn't run after made baskets.

Learn how to consistently score on them when they press and they will get out if it.

Remember 40 minutes of hell? Controlled chaos, if run appropriately. Ask Mizzou what it can do to one of your all time great, elite 8 teams.

I am talking about Jr High.

It worked well on defense, but they could not score on offense because they were so chaotic and they would turn the ball over.

Yes, use it. But, you have to settle down on offense to score.

My Jr high team ran a diamond press and a 2 2 1 press 95% of the time. We ran a motion offense with basically 3 set plays. I learned more about how to play defense, playing passing lanes, how to look at a guys hips and not the ball and in general how to run an offense as a pg not just be the guy who brings the ball up court

Then again my Jr coach is responsible for Quincy Lewis, deion cross (both played in the association) as well as bam doyne (ole miss..was on my team) and countless others

Not many teams can score in jr high.

Maybe pressing gives them the best chance to win by scoring off of turnovers because they suck offensively.

Maybe they would be really bad if they didn't press.

Having said that... man I loved playing middle school basketball. It was my first experience playing in that kind of more formal environment. Traveling to other schools, getting ready in the locker room, taking the court for the first time, having an actual coach and playing for district, etc.

Looking back it was really fun. We also never lost a game in middle school so that made it more fun.

Middle school basketball isn't always the prettiest, but it's fun and that's all that matters at that level.

I watched a 7th grade game a few years ago where Ruston pressed the entire game and won 45-5. Guess they were getting revenge for football.

When I coached 7th and 8th grade basketball our teams pressed after every basket we made. If we missed a basket or turned the ball over we went to a 1-1-3 defense. You just have to have the kids in a rhythm of always knowing that they only press after a made basket. I couldnt see going to a constant press and nothing else though.

Really before high school I think the press should only be run after half time.
Running it the whole game allows the other team to adjust and tires your team out.

Most middle school coaches do very little coaching. It is hard to watch

Probably had more to do with the team not being very good at running an offense & shooting the ball.

You can teach many concepts and only focus on a couple in games.

I've coached middle school age basketball and done it both ways. If I have an über athletic, hungry, smart team, lean/fast team I press a lot more than if I have a bigger, slower team that needs a more systematic approach.

While "teaching" is important, winning matters too.
