The Astros and Cubs basically went in opposite directions post all-star break.

This will all be forgotten when Keuchel goes into Yankee Stadium and shuts down a left-heavy NYY team, and the Astros bats bomb tanaka for 4 homers

I would lay my entire bankroll on Yankees -190 and probably lose

I do admit that the beauty of the Astros and the playoffs is that if/when they get in they could conceivably roll the WC game. Doubt they could out-muscle the Blue Jays over 7 games but might be fun.

Got unlucky with some injuries and underperformance by guys we traded for.

This team wasn't supposed to have the first half they had, and the rest of the division (including the Rangers back then) was not supposed to be so terrible. So when the front office realizes they have a shot at the division, they bring up Correa a little bit quicker (which helped us), and made some key moves at the deadline.

Unfortunately, the moves at the deadline didn't work out like they should have. Gomez had an inexplicably slow start out the gate. Then, he really comes on in late Aug but gets hurt. Kazmir is supposed to be an elite 2nd starter and was dominant mid summer, but he got worn down in August and dropped off completely.

The only aspect that could you say really choked was the bullpen. They are a Top 5 pen in baseball, but have been abysmal down the stretch. And as stated previously, we just kept fricking up against the Rangers. The frustrating part is that we have one of the best run differentials in baseball, so it's not like our record is some fluke, even though we slowed down in the second half.

Notwithstanding the misplaced schadenfreude by the majority of the MSB, the Stros' future is extremely bright. The run for the division we made this year and the playoffs run we could still make will hopefully re-stoke the fanbase that has suffered for the last decade.

Yeah good point - makes an upset way more possible.

I guess they'd still have to stare down a

Price
Estrada
Stroman
Dickey (hot weather start for sure)
Price

The Astro fans and the excuses. Pretty sad.

They'd much rather start Dickey than Buerhle or Hutch IMO. Dickey can screw up the other team's swings even if he does lose. I think he'd mess up the Astros pretty good.

Flat out the Cubs have a way better lineup and manager than the astros.

Over reliance on homers and an inability to deliver a RISP hit

RISP in September

48/213 .225

RISP in September losses
20/123 .163

Lack of clutch hitting combined with a 5.63 bullpen ERA in September is a recipe for disaster down the stretch.

Mate, if they go 4 man it will be Price, Estrada, Buerhle, and Stroman in my non expert opinion. Maybe Dickey in the pen

You expect the casual fan to know that?

No. That's why you write an article informing people of what may have happened.

This isn't rocket science.

fricking retard mouth breathers. What the astros have done this year is amazing they were picked to finish last by plenty of people.

They are full of young stars. Correa is going to be an ace defensive short stop with 30 home run a year power. Springer was gone for like two months. McCullers hit his slump eventually but will be an ace soon.

Farm system is still stacked.

Jesus Christ. Yea I'm mad. Go talk about the Nationals or one of the countless other teams with zero chance of playoffs.

I'd be shocked - Buerhle has been worse that Hutchison lately and I feel like Dickey "deserves" the start and has the numbers to prove it as well. My guess is that it's Price / Stroman / Dickey / Estrada. The only caveat is that if it's Yankees you might want to throw Dickey 2nd so he'd get a home start with the roof closed / climate controlled rather than outdoors in a cold Bronx.

quote:

One could argue that Dickey has earned it. As reported by Baseball Reference, since July 18, where he gave up one earned run, Dickey has pitched to 10 consecutive Blue Jays’ victories (seven where he was the winning pitcher) before losing Sept. 13.

Dickey has assembled a 2.59 ERA in his past 13 starts according to The National Post. He has gone at least six in every start but one since July 4, as later reported by The Post.

His numbers since the break are too good for him not to pitch. As long as the matchup is suitable (along with the conditions for his knuckleball).

No way they go with a 5-man rotation unless they're up 3-1 in a 7-game series IMO.

I've said all along they are the 2013 Braves. Except the Braves were way better record wise. But offensively it's identical. Injuries to Huddy & Heyward hurt the Braves down the stretch but they still couldn't score for shite in the postseason like always
