It get's them out of Cespedes contract, gives them a no.2 starter at least, and Gomes will obviously platoon. Win win for both. The Sox will more than likely sign Lester in free agency anyway so I think the really helps the Sox. Both teams won this trade imo.

Is it? Cespedes is hitting .256/.303/.464 this year he hit worse last year

They gave up Cespedes... WOW..

In the A's defense Cespedes can become a free agent after 2015 and there's no way the A's would be able to resign him.

So they trade Cespedes for Lester who will give them 10 starts then go back to the Sox?

He was due a big contract and he will probably get it with the the Sox. At least Beane learned to get something this time around instead of having another Damon/Giambi situation

so Cespedes is a .256 hitter with a .767 OPS?

Gomes is at .683 this year with a slightly higher OBP and less slugging.

They won't lose a ton offensively given the depth and strength of their lineup 1-9. there are no easy outs and they have a guy like Callipso coming off the freaking bench.

I don't follow baseball super close, but it seems like Samardzija and Lester are a pretty legit 1,2 at the top of the rotation.

Sonny Gray is better than both of them.

I mean, Shark has a legit chance in a 5 game series to not even start. That's fricking crazy

A's are betting the farm on their rotation being what gets them to a title

And they still have guys like Lowrie and Josh Donaldson and Brandon Moss as power hitters. They are top 5 in runs scored.

Now they have two Aces to shore up that rotation

Offensively, not really. They'll run a platoon in left in Cespedes' place.

Defensively, yeh it's a downgrade.

Their rotation is as deep as their lineup now. what a team. I kind of hope they win it all this year. and I'm an astros fan. if they win it all it will inflate the salaries of most of their players and they will be selling off parts and dlituting their depth over time.

A's pitching is what always lets them down in the playoffs. Now Beane is making moves to win it all this season.

The A's are going to lose him for nothing after 2015. I know they'll lose Lester after this year but they have the hitters to sustain this loss. Cespedes defense in the outfield will be the biggest subtraction.
