With as much money as Brees is tying up, we really can't afford to lock in Jimmy long term IMO. THat money would be better spent on defense. Look at Seattle. I hope the Saints Franchise him and then let him walk.
I hope we franchise him and trade him for a top 15 pick + another 1st/2nd. I think a guaranteed playmaker could warrant that much. He'd cost at least a top 15 1st and a 3rd I'm pretty sure on that.

I present you the following from his twitter bio:
Jimmy Graham Verified account
@TheJimmyGraham
New Orleans Saints Tight End #80. Private Pilot

I believe we can call this issue settled since he apparently agrees he is a TE.

I don't see why more people don't realize this.
I don't understand why more people aren't mad at the Saints and Sean Payton for flexing him out more often and making this even a possibility.

No offense, but I'd be pissed if I was drafted as a TE, played as a WR for all intents and purposes, and then was paid as a TE.
I'd be pissed if my Pro Bowl TE couldn't block worth a damn and he wanted top 5 WR money because of it.
Also saw this interesting tidbit in this article.
quote:
According to ESPN Stats & Information, Graham was one of 11 tight ends in the NFL last year who lined up more than 50 percent of the time at those traditional receiver positions. Only three of them were full-time starters. But the other two were Atlanta's Tony Gonzalez (67 percent) and San Diego's Antonio Gates (52 percent) -- which is noteworthy since those two players have always been considered as tight ends for the purposes of determining franchise-tag salaries.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Wait, let me laugh at this again.
BAGHAHAHAHAHAA
Nobody is giving you two first picks for a franchised Jimmy Graham that apparently wants big time WR money.

JG lines up as a TE 33% of the time and lines up in a traditional WR position 67% of the time.
Give me a top WR that lines up as a TE, at all or even 10% of the snaps. There are none.
No WR lines up as a TE (a decent amount of time), but all TE's line up wide.
ALL TEs OVER 50 PERCENT
Chase Coffman 79.3 29
Dennis Pitta 73.5 151
Gavin Escobar 71.4 189
Tony Scheffler 69.0 84
Dallas Clark 68.1 357
Kellen Winslow 67.9 321
Jacob Tamme 67.9 280
Tony Gonzalez 67.3 950
Jimmy Graham 66.8 816
Dante Rosario 55.3 176
Antonio Gates 51.7 1,007
ETA: 2 1st is REALLY farfetched - if someone were to even offer that, he's getting shipped. A 1st rounder at minimal is definitely feasible. Crazier trades have happened in the history of the NFL.
ETA2: Notice that guy named Tony Gonzalez who lines up wide more often than Jimmy Graham? What position does he play? WR?

ive brought that up before. and soon, graham will too count in the calculation for future tight end tags. and itll bring the tag number up a lot for TEs.

He never made it an issue though. I will laugh out loud if Jimmy gets classified as a WR, because I will immediately imagine Tony Gonzales calling up his agent and bitching him the hell out for not taking this course of action.

Until it comes time to talk money.
I still haven't seen a rational argument from anyone that wants to pay him the world for why he should be considered a TE for everything except the purposes of his contract.

He lines up as a WR more than 50% of the time is an entirely rational argument

He'd come back for another season to get paid top WR money

Brees messing with Jimmy's money.

And that's all you got? So let's classify him as a TE in every discussion regarding pro bowl, all pro, and records, but for money let's say he is a WR because he lines up as a WR in the formation more than 50% of the time.

If that's the case, the saints should let him go. He's nothing but a slower colston.

Trade him and let breeds make another no name TE into a super star. Coming out of college graham was an unknown with potential.
Wonder how it would have turned out if the jets, bills, raiders, etc..... had drafted him.

He's a TE and should receive TE money

I would like to see Graham in a Saints uniform next year. I do agree though that Brees makes all of his WRs and TEs better just by being on the field with them. I think that he could turn another pass catching tight end in college into an animal in the NFL.

What is dumb about that? Colston is faster than Graham. Graham can't block worth a shite, so we have to line him up at WR the majority of the time. Graham gets shut down by anybody physical. See entire 2nd half of the season.
If the saints pay graham what he wants, consider the saints in cap hell and the end of the Sean Payton era.

...that's all that matters right now per the wording of the CBA as it pertains to the franchise tag.
