Jim Ryun's 800 meter NCAA record is nearly 50 years old and still stands

The NCAA still lists his time from 1966 as the record for the 800 meter. He ran it in 1:44.3 but it was converted from an 880 yard time. This beats the 1996 NCAA record of 1:44.5 run from an actual 800 meter distance.
The length of time this record has stood is just amazing.
Middle distance running in the U.S. over the past couple decades must be lackluster.

Is it possible that converting the time threw something off?

timing more accurate now?

Jim Ryun is an extreme outlier. I believe he is the greatest high school runner of all time. His 3:55 mile was only eclipsed by Alan Webb's 3:53 mile. The two high school kids (Grant Fisher and Matthew Maton) that broke 4 this year both went 3:59.xx. Webb and Ryun are the only two American high schoolers to break 3:59. They crushed it.
Middle distance running is not lackluster. Ryun was just beyond great.

Distance running has changed over the years for HS. Runners like Jim Ryun and Marty Liquori used LSD extensively in their training. When I ran in the early 90's the shift was towards more plyometrics and interval training versus long slow distances. Find a HS middle distance runner willing to run 12-15 miles once a week. I don't think I ever exceeded 8 miles till well after I was done HS.
Of course both Ryun and Liqouri were special atheletes that would have succeeded in any era.

One of the directors in my office went to hs with him. He was a couple of years behind Ryun at EHS here in Wichita at the same time. Said he was playing a different game than the rest of the guys here in Kansas. Officially I think he went under 4 minutes in the mile 5 times in HS. I didn't know about the 800M record. That's unreal. I watched a guy the other night at the track turn in a 2:18 800M and I was blown away. (Disclaimer: I only recently got into doing any type of speed work on a track so my sample size is small.)
I just wonder what kind of times Ryun would have turned in on modern shoes and on a modern track.

I will never forget watching the 1968 1500 meter final live where Ryun was expected to get the gold, but Kip Keino blitzed him with a spectacular effort.
Yes, I know about the altitude factor, but the time Keino ran it in would have converted to something phenomenal at sea level.

It depends on the program. For example, York HS will have their veteran guys in the 90's. I agree in general with your post, but there are plenty of elite exceptions.

I think it'll fall with in the next couple years.

And he did it on a cinder track. Webb broke the record running a race against professionals. Ryun did it by himself.

Yup. It makes it all the more impressive.
Pedro, who do you think breaks his record?

American mens middle distance running is horrendous and has been for decades.

Horrendous is an exaggeration. The US is not Kenya, Ethiopia, Morocco, but they are far from awful.

Right. That's why the US has medalled at 1500m in 5 of the past 6 international championships. And why they won the world relays championships in the 4x800m and distance medley relay this year. And why they finished 4th and 5th at the 2012 Olympics in the 800m. And got a silver medal at the most recent international 800m championship. And set a world record in the distance medley relay.
Completely horrendous. They should feel horribly.

Must not have had drug testing then if they both used LSD. Ryan was the Secretariat of his sport. He was a freak of nature.

Not sure. I just can see someone stepping up and pulling it off. It's been too long.
