actually doesn't look bad at all, the thumb is amputated at the distal joint which means he can still "grab" things. the index finger is amputated at the knuckle it looks like and the 3rd finger looks to just be wrapped up. All of grip strength is in the 3rd-5th fingers so he would technically be fine for functionality purposes. well except for pointing and digging in his nose. once healed he should be able to play. having that thumb is crucial, even though it doesn't look like much.
worked as a nurse in an ortho trauma unit for about 5.5yrs. he is lucky it isn't worse.

Jeez, what kind of fireworks was playing with? Years ago, I saw a friend hold a artillery shell cannon in his hand and the shell never exited the tube and it exploded as he held it. It burnt the crap out of him, but he didn't lose any fingers. Not sure what fireworks are more powerful than the artillery shell but there can't be many that are, at least that are legal to buy without a license.

Not many. Last year there was news of a guy firing one off of his head and it blew his face off and killed him. Snapped his neck too.

Damn. When it blew up on my friend, it burnt the shite out of his hand. We took him to the ER just to be safe and they cleaned it up and gave him some cream to put it on it. I saw him a few days later and the palm of his hand was one big blister. It looked like he was holding a small sack of fluid. It was disgusting. Glad I wasn't there when it eventually popped, I'm sure I would have thrown up.

I burned my hand bad about three weeks ago, 2nd degree, in some sand under a wheelbarrow that was holding a bonfire. And I was piling through the silvadene cream too.
